On March 19th of this year Chas.
Iftfsr.Jones, editor of tho Oregou
Teachers' Monthly sent out circular
letters to each of the county superin
tendents, asking thom to nominate
candidates for state school superin
tendent. t Tho superintendents re
sponded quite generally, and tho fol
lowing candidates were named: L.
R. Alderman, Eugene; B. D. Ressler,
CorvalHs; A. J. Churchill, Baker
City; R. P. Robinson, Portland, and
P. L. Campbell, Eugene. Mr. Jones
took these candidates as a blsis for
a "straw vote;" ho printed a voting
coupon In the June number of the
Oregon Teachers' Monthly, and asked
tho teachers of the state to indicate
their choice, and send the coupons
to him. The contest ended on De
cember 25. In the January num
ber of the Oregon Teachers' Monthly
Mr. Jones will make tho following
announcement:
"The Oregon Teachers' Monthly's
straw voting contest for state school
superintendent closed on December
25. While tho votes have not been
so largo as expected, it has been
large enough to show tho choico of
the 'teachers. Altogether 1609 votes
wore cast, and each county In tho
state was represented, except Curry
and Lake. Tho votes were fairly well
distributed, and the following are
the" results obtained: L. R. Alder
man,' 916; E. D. Ressler, 218; R. F.
Robinson, 182; P. L. Campbell, 139;
A. J. Churchill, 101; scattering, 53.
The voto from tho first to last has
been quiet and orderly, and devoid of
excitement. The candidates in no
way'have taken any special Interest
In' tho matter. So far as we ktfow,
no solicitation or pressure or pres
sure by them has been brought to
bear upon any of tho teachers. The
candidates wore all well known to
the teachers, and they have been free
to vote for their choice without fear
or favor. Several months ago the
Oregon Teachers' Monthly made the
statement that wo would support the
choice of the teachers, and it is with
pleasure that we reaffirm this stae
mont. Mr. Alderman has been se
lected by a large majority; we con
gratulate him upon his popularity
among tho teachers."

Brothers next door to tho Ladd &
Bush bank is ono of tho oldest es
tablishments in that lino in tho
Willamette Valloy. Tho founder of
tho present firm is Paul H. Hauser,
who came to Saiem a mero boy in
1887, and was apprenticed to learn
tho business of machinist. Ho
learned to repair" machinery and
guns and bicycles and worked at
that business for a number of years.
In 1903 he bought out the present
gunstoro and put in a full line of
sporting goods, and has today tho
largest lino in the western part of
the state. In 1904 he associated
with him his brother, L. J. Hauser.
The firm carries a complete lino of
firearms, ammunition, and sporting
merchandise of all kinds. A large
powder magazine has been added In
tho eastern part of the city, where
Trojan powder is handled by the
carload, and in lesser quantities.
They are headquarters for this
blasting material that is now used
so extensively in clearing lands.

physicians of tho city, and reports
that his total sales during tho past
year Including stationery and toilet
articles has just about doubled.
This drug store always employs tho
services of a high-class registered
pharmacist for compounding pro
scriptions and was tho first to es
tablish a free delivery. Tho well
known Roxall lino of toilet prepar
ations and proprietory medicines Is
handled at the Perry Drug storo,
and it is a well known fact that only
one dealer in tho city, and he must
bo a man of high character in the
profession, is permitted to handle
theso goods. Tho Pierry Drug store
has all tho standard patent modi
cinos in stock and charges the same
prices to all customers.

posed sewer system for tho city of
Salem:
"In reference to the South Salem
sower system, and the location of
the main sowers In tho district, al
though I have not sufflcDent data,
at the present time to determine the
exact position of the sowers, it ap
pears to me that tho probably posi
tion of tho main s&wer for that por
tion of South Salem lying west and
east of High street Would run down
High -street to Mission, from Mission
to Bellovue, thence following South
MM creek to the Wlllamcttje slough,
and along tho Wlllametet slough to
the outlet bolow Ferry street.
"This sower will have laterals
connecting with It from the east and
west.
"The main sewer draining East
Salem should bo laid on Bellevuo
street with laterals running to from
the north and south. This main
sewer should connect with and have
thie same outlet as the High streei
sewer.
The sewer draining Yew Park dis
trict and tho low-lying district be
tween Yew Park and High street, one
should bo located on Twelfth strleot
and another oxtending through
Pleasant Homo addition, Tuxedo ad
dition and Nob Hill Annex.
"Theso should bo carried to Inter
cept the sower on Bolleyue street.
"Tho server draining tho south
east portion of that district should
cdnnect with tho Bellevuo sower at
Fifteenth straot, and should extend
south on Fifteenth street to Oak
street., then following the Turner
Road to Water street, along Water
street to Shelton street, and contin
uing east to tho city limits.
"It Is evident that for tho extent
of tho district which his sysem will
embrace that it will not bo practical
to construct a sower largo enough
for storm water and sanitary pur
poses. Tho system should bo con
structed -for sanitary purposes alono.
Storm water should bo carried from
the streets to tho nearest creek, and
as there aro quite a number of
these in this district, it will bo the
tho cheapest and most effective man
ner of handling It."
Alderman Elliott has made a hard
fight to get a comprehensive sewor
age -system established for tho Cap
ital City.
