Tho investigators allege that tho passes were purloined from one of tho railroad departments, and sold to employment agents and others for shipping laborers over tho road. The board of governors of tho promotion depart ment of the Eugene Commercial Club last evening elected D. C. Freeman of Portland as manager of tho club for 1910 to succeed John II. Hartog, who leaves Eugene for New York City tomorrow evening. Mr. Freeman was tho unanimous choice of tho governors, who consid ered quite a number of applications. Ho was strougly recommended by prominent men of the northwest. Mr. Freeman is a practical newspaper man, but his work in tho northwest 9ias been along exploitation linos, having represented tho Harrlman linos in Washington and Idaho. Ho was secretary and assistant to tho lato President Goodo of tho Lewis and Clark exposition. During tho last year ho was ongagdd in exploit ation work in connection with tho A.-Y.-P exposition at Seattle. The manager will tako up his work the 1st of January. TOWN OF REX, ORE.. He died early this morning at his home in Jacksonville, whoro ho has resided since 1849, being one of tho first to roach that place after tho discovery of gold. Judgo Day was poIbly tho boat known of Southern Oregon pioneers, lie Is survlrod by a daughter only, who is at present in Colorado for herhor health. Ho was 84 years of age.
