DAILY CAPITAL JOURNAL, SALEM, OREGON, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 2, 1000. PAGE THREE! GENERAL MEETING POPULAR Proposed Convention Upon , County Road Matters. Is Gaining In Favor. The proposed general road meet ing which Is b)Olng propounded by County Judgo William Bushey, is gaining favor among the taxpayers and voters In general throughout the county, according to reports com ing in daily, and the matter is being seriously discussed. In order not to conflict with any other assembly or mjeeting which may tend to draw the people away from the general road meeting, the county court has decided to postpone the meeting to the 16th and 17th of this month Instead of the Cth and 7th as was first announced. Upon the former date, there will bo a meeting of the fruit growers in Portland, and a large amount of Marion County people will no doubt attend, thus taking away many people who will be interested in the road meeting. Among the matters which will be brought to issue and dealt witli during the proposed nteetlng, is the state road law. Judgo Bushey is desirious of adopting some substan tlon and practical mode by which the governing of county roads can be carried on without a continual con flict with the interests of the public The Johnson road law, or bill which was turned down by the last asseiu bly of the legislature, would have been of sbmto benefit to the commu nity in Judge Bushey's opinion, and -by failing to adopt this measure, the state has befen practically bereft of a road law owing to the fact that the Tuttle law, now In effect. Is being contested in the supremo court and taxpayers are in a quandry as to just jwhat amount of cognizance can be adhered to concerning the legal pha ses of the Tuttlo law. . Another topic will claim the at tention of the court and the attend ance at the meeting, Is the county road problem. Petitions calling for the creation of new roads arc being bitterly fought; divisional roads the instigator of much bitter controversy notwithstanding the great need of the highway both to those favoring and opposing. Con clusiveness is a thing almost Inipos slblo to arrive at by the court, so strenuous are some issues contested, they being carried to the extromo lim it of the law, not for the purpose of relieving taxation nlojie, but a large portion of thte objection being duo to disagreement over the premises and the route of the proposed county road. It will be presented during the meeting for an open discussion land it possible. some method will bo adopted, or started, uy wnicn. the residents of the respective districts can arrive at some leasable and bene ficial conclusion. It has been sug gested to the county court by some that the construction of highways be left to the district to iclthor improve or create their own roads. In this manner the respective district can realize Immediate benefit instead of petitioning the county court for help and be burdened with a special road tax levy. As the result of tab present county roads, or main roads, becoming ade quate to accommodate tho many now home builders in former isolated dis tricts as far as roads are concerned, it is probable that the matter of a straight road through the county from north to south will be agitated. A straight county road through the center of the county was talked of several years afo, but no definite con clusion was arrived at. It Is con tended that by creating such a road, tho farming district of Marlon County will have greater excess to the main road than to carry on the construc tion of now roads through farms and private property. At the present time the county has six loading roads or main, highways, by which the far mers and residents in the counrfy can gain admittance to the city, although several of these main roads are con siderable distance from many of tho farms and the only way loft for thoes farmers Is through a crude roadway broken by themselves and almost Im passable during the rainy season. In the north part of the county near the St. Paul district the roads are not lo cated so that the residents can ap proach the main highway. The coun ty court thought that matter could bo Improved by creating a county main road a few miles west of the old stage road which passed down east of Chemewa. As in this way, resi dents located nearer to the stage road could take that routle, while those residing farther toward tho river could handily reach the highway by traveling a few miles west. The first general road meeting will be made the starting, and the expi diting of road matters will be prac tically accomplished without the us ual lone discussions and tedious con sideration of the petitions for and against such a proposal. County Judge Bushey extends a cordial in vitation to all the people, In Marlon County to attend on tho lGth and 1.7th of this month, and come prepar ed to discuss their interests in their respective locality and offer any ad vice they can toward bringing the county road business to a harmoniz ing tone. PLENDID ATTRACTION TONIGHT "King Dodo," that merry mingling of mirth and molod'y from tho doiis of those gifted writers, Frank Plxloy and uustav Ludors, will bo tho at traction at the Grand tomorrow night John Cort, tho astiito and nrocros- slvo theatrical magnnto, under whoso uirection tills excollont comedy opera Is being presented this season, has gone to unlimited pains and expense in malkng this the crandest "Dodo" of all. The scenery, properties and effects are entirely now and magnifi cent and the costumes aro gorgeous. Mr. Court has specially engaged Charles H. Jones, who staged tho original, to stage this season's pro duction. While many show-shoppers havo seen "King Dodo," there still re main many thousands who havo hov er enoyed thej delights of this clever opera. Tho story has to do with a decrepit old monarch, King, Dodo I, of Dodoland, who Is possessed of tho idea that he would Hko to regain his youth. To this end ho does all sorts of foolish things, such as havlne tho calendnr sot back a trifle of 30 years, ana Keeping his court physician in constant dread of a violent death if ho does not discover for him tho ellx- er of eternal youth. Plola. a vountr soldier of fortune, has had the temer ity to fall in lovo with tho king's ward, Angola, and proposes to marry her. To this King Dodo objects most strenuously, for she is a great favorite with him, and he intends to regain his youth and marry her him self, until Plola, In a desperate effort to gain his own ends, promises to lend the king to a fountain which will make him young again. The second act of the comedv onora finds all thoso interested in Snooniu- land, which is ruled by a queen of surpassing loveliness, whitluer Plola has guided tho king in search of tho fountain of youth. Queen Llli has announced that sho will marry none but a man of yoars and experience, and when Dodo I and his ontourgo are taken into her presence sho see3 in him tho man she has been wait ing for, and, as sho pleases Dodo's fancy, the wooing speeds merrily along until the conspirators got busy and is given a drink from a spring which is indeed a verltablo fountain of youth. Immediately the old king is transformed into a boy. Dodo I is delighted, but tho queen will havo none of him. Again tho conspirators como to the rescue, for, with the idea of drowning the latest favorite of tho queen, they throw him Into tho same spring, and by its wonderful power ho Is again trans formed Into tho decrepit old monarch ho was when tho queen of tho Spooju people first saw him. Dodo Is of a forgiving disposition, and whon ho finds that the queen will bo his ho gives his blessing to evoryono nnd ins kingdom to Plola and Angola. isox oillco open today.
