San Francisco, Aug. 21. Accord
ing to Collector of tho Port Frederick
Strntton. San Francisco will bo grcnt
iy benefited by, the ruling of tho
treasury department which decided
that only shipments from tho Philip
pines coming direct can bo admitted
t'o the United States duty free. As
oan Francisco Is tho only direct port
of entry, necessarily the 'shipments
will be billed to thin port nnd then
transhipped, according to shipping
men. Strntton said:
"There nro only two direct Unco
irora Manila to tho United States, the
Pacific Mali and tho Toyo Klson.
None can, under tho circumstances,
run direct to Now York, whero tho
bulk of the product of tho Philippine
Islands Is expected to bo lnndcd. Tho
decision denying freo entry to prod
ucts transhipped roni tho islands to
the United States will eorvo to build
up the commerce of San Francisco."
Virtually all the products of the
Philippines, rlco excepted, is allowed
to enter the Untied States free.
Annually 300,000 tons of BUgnr,
300,000 pounds of wrapper tobacco,
1,000,000 pounds of filler tobacco
and 150,000,000 cigars aro shipped
from Philippine ports. In addition
there nre a number of shipments of
copra, hemp, fruits and Imports of
minor value.
