THE STREAM OF OREGON.

J I am resting, sweetly resting, on tho placid sen of years,
Where are no distressful longings and we Bhed no bitter tears:
In my roso-erobowored cottnge, while tho timo Is gliding on,
In tho shadow of the mountnlns by tho Stream of Oregon,
In tho fliinshlno of tho springtime when tho soft chlnook has come,
' And tho silent woods arc glonmlng with tho waxon trllllum,
And tho looms of nnUiro's weavorB havo tholr carpeting bogun,

When tho bowing fairy Illy flecksthe meadow o'er with white,
And tho nlr so soft nnd balmy fills my spirit with delight,
Llko tho lambs within the pasturo I would skip and danco In fun
O'er tho slopes within tho volley by tho Stream of Oregon.
Whdn tho sanguine flowering current paints each verdant copso with
' blood,
' iAnd tho blushing nalmon borry shows Its stars within tho wood,
' ' And tho 'yellow dandollon's shining In tho mellow sun,

PEERLESS ADVANTAGES OF OREGON'S CAPITAL CITY.
Geographically Snloni hns advantages that do not often
fall to a cfty,
It Is located on a beautiful navigable rivor with stieams
of wator pouring through the city direct from the Cascade
mountains.
Tho rivor on which Salem is located is navigable for about
ton months In the year for river steamboats,
In a productive way Salem is in tho vory contor of tho
richest farming and fruit region in Oregon.
Politically balom Is the state capital and has nino state
institutions and tho government Indian training school,
Bosses grain, hay, livestock, poultry and dairying, the
country about Salem for twenty-five miles in every direction
produces great money crops like hops, prunes, cherries, wool
and mohair.
Educationally Salem has evoiything from a university to a
fiist-class public school with model high school, music and
manual training,
The population shows a steady increase of from 500 to
1000 a year.
It is a lovely home city of rosidoncos, schools, churches,
Thoro is a city libraiy, theatres, band concerts and Reed
newspapers,
Men are long-lived here and ladies who come from the east
say the western Oregon climate produces superb complexions
In tho way of manufacturing Salem has tho largest and
most modern equipped snwmifl in western Oregon,
Salem has splendid woolen mills, fruit cannories, fruit
packing housos, breweiy, brick and tile works, sash and door
factorios, iron works, flouring mills,
Salem has five of tho largest and best equipped depart
ment stores in the state.
A dollar will buy more In tho way of family supplies at
Salem than in any city on tho Pacific const,
Salem has a progressive city government.
Tho principal streets are 99 feet wide betweon property
lilies, have concrete sidewalks and are laid with hard-surface
bitulithic pavement,
Tho city has several public squares and wide streets that
aro planted to large, beautiful shade trees,
A campaign has been Inaugurated to secure public parks.
A commission of fifteen of tho most prominent citizens are
working to bring Salem and tho state institutions a mountain
water supply,
A gravity system of water taken from a stroam In tho
Cascade mountains, fed by the eternal snows, will be brought
Into Salem within two years.
Salem has now a first-class abundant water supply
numned from a ciib sunk in a gravel bar in the Willamette
river.
Sntem has first-class train service, steam and electric, to
Portland and San Francisco.
Salem has nearly twenty miles of electric street car serv
ice, with cars running from 6 a, m, to 1 1 p, m on sched
ules of 12 to 15 minutes,;
Salem has abundant electrh and watei power with cheap
sites for manufacturing.
Fuel for family use at Salem, meats, vegetables, flour and
family supplies are cheap,
Business opportunities are good, although all lines are well
represented except hotels.
One steel building, five stories, a number of business blocks
and 500 residences are going up this year,
Salem has in the neighborhood of 15,000 population.
A new railroad is just being completed the Salem, Dallas
and Falls City to the big coast timber on the west,
Salem people are hospitable and prosperous and welcome
newcomers and homeseekers to their beautiful Cherry City,

WHY REPUBLICANS WERE DEFEATED.
..The Oregonian attributes all the woes of the Republican
party to the Direct Primary law,
That law Is clean In principle and operation and Democrats
were elected to office before it was enacted and will be again.
A Democratic district attorney was elected in Portland be
cause Republicans permitted wide open gambling in hoteis,
Traveling men, state and countv officials, iudees and fed
eral officers bucked the tiger and lost large sums,
Georce E, Chamberlain was elected district attorney and
Tom Word sheriff as a rebuke to a Republican machine in
open partnership with crime.
Wholesale robbery throueh oool rooms and race track
gambling was tolerated by the Republican machine in Mult-,
nomah county,
There was then no primary law to ensnare and defeat
Republicans.
Manning's election as public prosecutor was a rebuke to
vice,
Mayor Lane was elected to office as a protest against a
red light district protected by a red-handed machine,
It was not because sexual vice existed in Portland's North
End and tenderloin, but because the machine plausibly rep
resented by the Republican candidate was in oartnershirj
with it.
A rancher or business man caught In the toils of the ten
derloin would be robbed of a gold watch or $500 or $1000,
Appeal to the police brought him no relief or protection.
Like card gambling and race track gambling, vice was en
couraged by protection.
The police would make the habitue of the tenderloin give
up the plunder in whole or part and keep it or divide it with
the machine,
The man robbed would be told to keep still or he would be
scandalized in the press.
And he would keep still and the combination would steer
the next victim into the tolls,
It is the general belief that Mayor Simon will not restore
the machine partnership with vice at Portland.
If he does, the people will rebuke the machine by wiping
out the Republican party in the state and the legislature,
Pennoyer was elected a Democratic governor twice be
fore there was a direct primary law or Statement No, 1 ,
Chamberlain was made governor before there was any di
rect primary or Statement No. 1.
The Portland machine demanded the retirement of Gov.
Geer because they wanted a candidate who could put up,
It is reliably reported that the Scott - Matthews machine
demanded $15,000 to carry the Portland primaries In that
campaign, and got It,
There was no direct primary then to defeat and demoral
ize the Republican party.
The party then had all the glories of leadership by able
men who were organizers,
Governor Geer to hold his own had to organize his friends
and they spent money lavishly in Marion county,
Who does not recall the colonizing of wood-choppers at
$5.00 a head and the $4.00 per head lodging house vote? .
There was no direct primary law and Statement No, 1 then
to demoralize the republican party,
The demoralization all came from the "higher-ups," and
sack-holders of the machine. ''
Jack Matthews got his reward but the men who put up
their money to buy the governorship and the senatorship
continued to act as sack-holders,
Then the direct primary law was enacted to serve the
Republican machine and yice.
And the sack-holding leadership has been holding an empty
sack ever since,
We do not believe that Mayor Simon will restore that part
nership, If he does the people of Oregon will crush it and put the
Republican party out of business permanently.
It has never been charged that the direct primary was
open to corrupt manipulation,
Mistakes may be made under it,
Incompetent men may occasionally get into office uhder it.
But the people will prefer cleaner men of less ability to
leadership notorious only for corruption and degradation of
the commonwealth and its principal municipalities,
But the Republican party has never suffered a defeat it)
Oregon on account of the enactment of the direct primary
law,
It has been rebuked a-number of times because of its
trucculency to the vicious underworld, when . its officials
winked at robbery and were In a hand-in-glove partnership
with the criminal elements of society,
