SALEM SHOULD TAKE FORWARD STEPS.
On sane and safe business.lines this cHy should take for
ward stops and become the proud Capital City of the state,
' With. paving well under way, with a better class of busi
ness f biiildljigs like the new Breyman building and the U.
S, National Bank building, there is a fine start.
Let this be followed up with a fine hotel, and let us back
the men who put their money into a hotel, and great steps
for saving the state capital here will have been taken.
The next great step to be taken is when that popular vote
is had for the first park on August 3rd, let it be an unani
mous verdict for progress.
Mountain water must follow next, and this city should fight
for five, years if necessary to bring in pure water for the
statelnstitutions,
One bad epidemic from rotten water such, as some of
them have now would sweep the state capital away from
here, and cost this city millions, and the taxpayers twice as
much.
The duty devolves upon the present generation to make
this a city in the true sense of the word and not a jerkwater
overgrown country town,
Talk to your neighbors about these things and prepare to
act.
REMARKABLE GROWTH OF WALLA WALLA.
An advertising booklet sets forth the beautiful city of
Walla Walla in fine style,
It is published by the Washington Printing and Book Man
ufacturing Co, of that city and is equal to any Sunset publi
cation. That city has leaped from 9000 to 22,000 since 1900, and
is growing like a tall rank weed of the prairie,
Walla Walla has mountain wator, parks, miles of paved
streets, and seven newspapers and a live business community
The booklet boasts of long summers, hot weather and per
fect conditions for making frirt crops,
The county has 34,000 population and the tax levy is 12V2
mills on a valuation of $19,000,000.
Whitman college has 400 students, thirty-five professors,
ten buildings, and an endowment of $560,000,
That county has the Northern Pacific and the 0, R, and N,
railroads, with 69 shipping stations, four and a half miles
apart.
Salem lias the advantage of Walla Walla in being a state
cmtfll, and with modern methods can become as fino a city,

OH, .YES, KILL OFF THE INITIATIVE AND REFERENDUM.
An East Portland political bunch has oassed resolutions to

Jho resolutions were drawn up by probably the biggest
corporation lawyer in Portland. " l
Tho havo boon printed twice in the Oregonian and com

Swoop away the only safeguard the people have and let
the bars down for special qrafts for the big ones.
Thoro aro four supreme justices to nominate next year and
wo want thorn in our camp foi results,
The assembly w'll do the business, kick out the two Dem
ocrats, and hand over the four places for trading stock.
To h I with the direct election of senators, statement
No, 1, the recall, and piopoitional representation,
Power doesn't belong to the illiterate proletariat and so
called intelligent voters who are ignorant asses at best.
Isn't it a beautiful program to steer the G, 0, P, up
