THE TIME HAS COME TO DO SOME. THINKING.
County Judge Bushey made a significant remark at the
meeting held at the court house the other day to devise ways
and means to finish the county road into the Gold Creek
mining district,
He said the state and educational taxes this year were the
latest ever collected In Marion county.
Then he added: "And next year they will be higher."
Marion county is on a cash basis, has no floating or bonded
debt and this year had the lowest levy of any county in the
Willamette valley, , i x . ,
Figures just publ'shed show that the state government for
the next two years will cost upwards of four and a half million
dollars. , nnnnnn , .. ,
Two appropriations amounting to $220,000 may be added
to this if sustained by a popular vote.
The people who have nothing to do but pay the taxes willbe
interested in knowing what their hired men have been laying
out for them in the shape of work for the future.
Usually the hired man takes specific amount, and what the
farmer agrees to pay him,
But in our state legislature the hired men take what they
please, and also say how the farmer shall spend his money.
Once in a while the farmer misses a lot of calves and other
stuff and finds the hired men have added a little to their per
quisites on the side lines to go to the circus with,
Then the farmer is glad he is permitted to live on the old
place.
He takes another hitch in his trousers while the political
automobiles go whizzing and honking along the roads he builds,
In the meantime the farmer is doing some cussing inwardly.
The secretary of state's force has completed a condensed
statement of the appropriations of the recent legisalture, show
ing the total to have been $3,914,939,38,
But there are a number of permanent taxes levied by former
legislatures not included in this.
The figures would have gone considerably over the four
million mark had it not been for items that could not be counted
among the expenditures of this biennial period, and one that
does not go -into effect until approved by the people,
