Davis, a negro 25 years old, was
lynched today by n mob of 300 white
men. Tho negro confessed to having
choked Amy Holmes, a 15-year-old
whlto girl, who discovered him rob
bing her parents' home last Friday.
Ho said he feared that she would
mako an outcry and have him ar
rested. When nows of tho negro's confes
sion got abroad today n mob was
quickly formed, took tho negro from
the authorities and quickly lynched
him. Shorlff Philipot and his depu
ties today tried to prevent the mob
from harming tno negro but their
pleading was in vultt. Tho prisoner
was taken from tho Jail nnd hanged
to n tolcgrapk pole In tho business
section of tho town.
Thoro was no shooting and tho mob
did Its work so quletiy that tho rest
of tho population know nothing of
tho affair until thoy saw tho body
hanging from tho polo this morning.
No arrests havo been made.
