THE FIGHT FOR THE NEXT GOVERNORSHIP IN OREGON.
In 1910 the people of Oregon choose a Governor for four
years, V. imm&Mlm
In 1910 they also elect a legislature but no U. S. Senator.
There will never be a more favorable opportunity to get
a business administration and a decent business legislature.
The people should sleze tho key to the sltuatoln and elect
an Anti-Machine Independent Governor.
Tho old political machine with headquarters at Portland
has its candidate for Governor selected already.
Tho machine will hold a nominating assembly to "sug
gest" a state ticket but principally a Governor,
The machine demands above all to have the office of
Governor.
Under tho direct Primary the people have two chances
to one against tho machine,
Undo rthe convention or assembly system the machine
has two chances to the people's one. They do not Intend
that tho people shall have any voice In naming the Governor
Undor tho dlroct primary if the people cannot win at the
nominatnig election thoy can defeat the machine nominee at
tho general oloction,
Tho pooplo or the machine must nominate and elect, One
or the other will rule. If the machino dictates tho nomina
tion tho people will overthrow that dictation at tho election,
In all independent commonwealths tho people demand a
Governor who is not a crcaturo of the machino.
In New York tho pooplo have made Hughes Governor In
splto of tho machino and the party bosses,
Cummins In Iowa and Folk In Missouri woro olocted
against tho machine.
In 1908 four states olectod Governors of tho opposite
party and dofeated machino nomineos of the dominant politi
cal party.
Ohio, Indiana and Minnesota olocted Democrats and gavo
their electoral votes to Taft,
Thoso strong Republican states dofoatod tho party ma
chino nomineos for tho office of chief exeoutlve.
Whoro tho party is so strong that tho machino dominates
tho logislaturo tho people have no protection whatever ex
cept by electing an anti-machine Governor.
That is what tho people of Orogon must bo prepared to
do for thoir own protection,
Tho wholo struggle of tho Orogon Ropublican machino
from this time Jforth will bo to capturo tho governorship,
A machino Govornor moans a machino loglslativo program
more than anything that has ever been undertaken in Ore
gon. With a machino Govornor tho next logislaturo would com
mit outragos that novor soo tho light of day when there Is a
people's Govornor in tho oxocutlvo chair,
Thoro is no alternative for tho dominant party machino
politicians but to nominate a machine man for Governor.
Thoy will not do anything olso bocauso tho machino poli
ticians instinctivoly gravitato to tho best roprosontativo of
thoir own systom,
plundof and tho machino

Tho neonlo of Oregon should ins
will not bo a trucculont tool to blindly oxecuto the will of
tho machino.
That kind of a Ropublican Govornor would bo appreciated
by tho pooplo of all partlos,
A candidate dlroct from tho people, fresh off the range,
not too woll broko to tho machino harnoss, not too wlso
working all tho ancient grafts, who has not grown callous
to tho wants of tho taxpayers would run woll even in tho
Ropublican party.
Tho taxpnyors of tills state can only stand about so much,
They have nearly reached tho limit.
Thoy do not balk at needed public improvements,
But piling up an ondloss accumulation of grafts Is an in
dustry that has been overworked.
Tho pooplo want a Govornor who Is not afraid to tako a
legislature by tho napo of tho nock and shako it out of its
boots,

The Leading Lard Packer Says:
"Leaf is the cream of lards. There is not enough of it to
supply one-tenth of the rjeople."
Here is a frank admission from the leading lard packer that
nine-tenths of the people are using other than leaf-lard the only
lard that is even safe. So you see what a chance you have of
getting purity when you buy lard. You are simply taking
chances on a nog-fat product of disreputable ancestors and doubt
ful cleanliness.
On the other hand when you buy Cottohm you get a pure
vegetable product. It is better and healthier than lard because
its source is clean its process of manufacture is clean, and it is
marketed in clean, air-tight cans that shut out all odors and con
tamination.
