DEALING WITH THE COLLEGE HAZING EVIL.
Woodburn Grange resolutions publlshd in this paper hit the
hazing abuses at colleges right between the eyes.
Neither the students nor the faculties of our colleges and
universities SEEM CAPABLE OF DEALING WITH THE PROB
LEM. It should bo made the duty of the district attorneys to
deal with It, If it is not already their duty according to law.
What right have college students to commit outrages on
tho person of other students ANY MORE THAN ANY OTHER
CRIMINALLY INCLINED INDIVIDUAL?
Nono whatover, and nonce they have no right to enjoy im
munity from tho punishment provided by law for such of
fenses, Let tho laws bo onforcod against those enjoying the hlgh
ost privileges of socloty, AS WELL AS AGAINST THE POOR
AND UNFORTUNATE.
Tho authorities should oxpol students found guilty of haz
ing and forovor forbid thorn entering a stato-aidod college.
Tho student at tho Oregon Agriqultural College who drew
a butchor knife and also threatened to shoot hazers was in
tho right. v
Ho assorted tho unwritten law of self-defense against
cowardly assailants, who IN THE NAME OF FUN AND COL
LEGE SPIRIT COMMIT OUTRAGES.
That put an ond to tho practice at Corvallls that was fast
dogonoratlng into criminality that is a discrodit to alleged
soats of loarning.
Only Monday the tolograph brought tho news of hazing to
death of Charles Stintson at Minneapolis, A STUDENT TIED
UP TO A TREE BY THE HEELS.
IS THAT ANY LESS THAN KIDNAPING OR MURDER?
It Is said at tho ond of tho tologram that it is oxpectod
that arrests will follow, but thoy never do, as ovorybody
sooms afraid to incur tho ill will of alleged collogo spirit.
It Is to bo hoped tho grango generally will tako up this
mattor,
TRIBUTE TO THE LATE GEORGE T. ANGEL
r
This Is tho briof and slmplo story of George T. Angol's lifo
-ho was a fighter in a groat causo In which there was no
roward oxcopt tho satisfaction of mind and conscience that
comos to him who Is ovor tho champion of right. Ho llvod
to oxompllfy tho faith expressed in those linos;
"Tho snmo forco fashlonod tho sparrow that fashioned man,
tho king.
Tho God of tho wholo gnvo n spark of soul to furrod and
fofithorod thing;
And am I my brothers keopor? and I will fight his fkht,
And spank tho word for boast and bird till tho world shrill
soft things right."
PUT UP GOOD FRUIT EXHIBITS.
Largo stocks and flno show windows aro ono of tho bost
advortisomonts of this city.
In llko mannor fruit oxhiblts in our retail stores CAN BE
MADE TO ADVERTISE THE CITY.
A Salem merchant who put out a bomitlful display of or
anges, applos and pinoapplos incionsod his salos 100 por
cent.
Bad fruit displayed in front of out storos is a DISCREDIT
TO THIS SECTION AS A FRUIT COUNTRY.
Flno fruit displays not only incronso salos but give the
buslnoss of tho stroot a fino appear nnco.
There Is not a retail grocer or fruit stand in tbo city but
could holp advortise Salem BY SPENDING SOMETHING ON
FRUIT.
Ton dollars a wook spent on making a fruit display and a
fow hours spont on making an exhibit would holp advertise
Snlom wondorfully,

A CHANCE TO MAKE POLITICAL CAPITAL.
Creating new offices and commissions, erectin gnew insti
tutions and extenslng old ones, there was no way to make
much politcall capital in the legislature.
The Senate was held as in a vice in the grip of the com
bined interests to kill labor bills AND ALL LEGISLATION AD
VERSE TO TRUSTS AND CORPORATIONS.
What could they make political capital of but the normal
schools?
Institutions attended three-fourth by women fell an easy
prey to men DRIVEN TO FIND SOMETHING TO STRIKE OUT.
Had the normal schools been attended only by young men,
or were there as many young men in them even as young
women, the blows would not have fallen.
But a lot of schoolma'ams who have no votes INSPIRE N0
RESPECT IN THE SOLONS.
Look at the national guard, composed entirely of voters,
THEY GOT AN OFFICE CREATED FOR LIFE.
The same was true of the State University and Agricul
tural College,
BOTH HAVE THOUSANDS OF VOTERS AND GET WHAT
THEY WANT.
But school-ma'ams are feeble creatures and we can econo
mize. It was our only chance to make political capital AND WE
MAD TO DO IT.
We were out of meat and had to nail the hides of the
normal school woodchuck on the bam door.
Well, here's hoping some good may come of It.
The Oregonian is now publishing articles favorable to dis
trict normal schools, and editorials for county normal schools.
What a rich old joker tlfe Oregonian is- ,anyhowl It is a
joke to take It seriously.
