FIFTH WARD WANTS THE
ROAD TO FAIR GROUNDS
Editor Journal;
Soma people seem to think that
Fifth ward Is opposed to a boulevard
to the fair grounds such is not the
case. The only objections the Fifth
ward Improvement League hud was
the proposed route. Why put It en
tirely to one side of the town and
make It impossible for the farmers
or any one else to reach It, In com
ing into town? Tho proposed plan
would leave the boulevard practically
useless except tho one week of the
fair during the entire year, except
for private speeding.
Almost any route for the general
public would be better than the one
proposed. My own opinion is It
should start on Court and Liberty
streets nnd run north to Market,
and then on Market to Sixth nnd
then either on Sixth through to High
land avenue or the Fair Grounds road
to the fair grounds. It could be
l)ii It cheaper and better out the Fair
Grounds road than any other way, as
that has a solid rock bottom about
three feet deep. Gravel has been
put in there for the last fifty years,
and a six-Inch dressing of crushed
rock would make an excellent road.

While we are making an Improve
ment let us make It In the Interest of
the general public.
We were Informed at our league
meeting that one of the committee
said they T tho committee) did not
want tle boulevard built where the
farmers could use It, ns they would'
be hauling wood and manure over
It and spoil the roud for speeding.
I want the boulevard built, and I
think Fifth ward agrees with me, so
the farmers enn travel on It and haul
n load of unthlug they may wish to
bring to town or take out. And as
Fifth ward will have ,to help puy
for the building, It would be well to
consult Its Interests and let us all
work together In harmony for the
best Interests of Salem In general.
B. C. MINTON.
So the boulevard Is built to the
fair grounds, It doesn't matter much
what route It takes,
