President elect Tnft vigorously protested last night against what he said was an absolute misrepresentation In certain Now York afternoon papers of what he had said in answering cfuestions regarding tariff revision. He had stated, he said, that the present busi ness depression was undoubtedly due in a large measure to tho fact that the tariff Is to bo revised at an extra session of congress to meet March 15. That it was of the highest Im portance that this revision should not be dolaycd and hoped it would be completed by juno 1. Mr. Taft also said ho favored a permanent tariff commission, the plnn for which had uccn marked out with deliberation. Its diitlos wore to bo to make n care ful study of the operation of the pro posed new tariff law, to the end that tho whole question of the tariff might be placed on a more scientific basis. Upon this statement Mr. Taft was made to say that the present tariff schedules -were responsible for the present business deprcssioa and thnt when they wore revised their own parents would not know them, all of which was amplified at length and made posltlvo by appearing to be a vigorous nnd enthusiastic statement. Mr. Tnft was perturbed ovor what he called a misrepresentation. Ho had, he declared, changed his posi tion In no way, and hold the same views he had publicly announced dur ing and since tho campaign. Mr. Tnft said to n reporter; "As this Is the primary requisite for tho relief of present conditions, I wnnt to havo It disposed of at onco. 1 am hopeful that mere will bo 'im portant revisions in the existing schedules inndo by congress in nn ex tra session, and I look forward to Juno 1 as tho dnto whon most of Our French Room Will soon bo ready for your fn- .,., . in i, .i.h ... . - . Such a commission, ir appointed now, might block the plan of revision as now contemplated, said he. After the revision tho commission would gather other data, watch tho new laws working nnd suggest amend ments to thorn. Mr. Taft also mado public today a letter which he sent to Sereno Payne, chairman of the ways nnd means committee of tho house, in re gard to the resolutions adopted at tho tariff conference held nt Indianapolis on February 16, in which Mr. Taft wrete: "A tariff commission would be harmful or useful as Its functions wero described in the bill. My own ideas havo been that there ought to bo, a permanent commission of tariff exports to keop thcmsolvcs advised by nil means possible of the cost of production of tho nrtlclcs named In the schedules In foreign countries and In this country, I think thnt what wo lack is evidonco, and some such means might very well bo used for tho purposo of securing It. I should be the last to advocate n commission with any power to fix rates, If that were constitution, which it would not bo, or witlj any function other than that of furnishing tho evidence to congress, upon which, from timo to tlmo, It might act. Mr. Van Clenvo and H. 15. Miles of Racine, Wis., chairman of tho tar iff commission of tho National Man ufacturers' Association, called on Mr. Tnft todny as n part of tho committee troni tho national tariff commission In Indianapolis. Mr. Tnft told Mr. Van Cleave that ho desired to have further Information concerning a commission of tnrlff exports and would glvo It every consideration, fho present lull In industry, Mr. Tnft said, was undoubtedly due to Im pending tnrlff legislation, but ho James W. Van thought that with that knowledgo In view congress woutd concluo Its de liberations nt nn early date, possibly in June, Tariff changes always halt business for a tlmo, was tho opinion expressed by Mr. Taft, and tho Boon- or such legislation was drawn nnd adoptod tho better for tho country. Mr. Van Cleavo said after his con foronco with Mr. Taft that tho presl-dont-olcct expressed his bollof In n tariff commission to consider changes In tariff schedules from year to yoar. ,:r":i: p: Wa,,a". of ".- &UUBI OI Jlrs lew Park.
