A PLAIN TALK ON BEHALF OF MARION COUNTY.
The bill for a now home for the Oregon Deaf-mute Insti
tute carrios $75,000.
It moans a splendid now institution in this city which
WILL BE APPRECIATED BY ALL TRUE SALEMITES.
I t is an act of humanity to a class of unfortunate chil
dren who ought not be "isolated on a farm seven miles from
a city.
The old property of tho stato in that school will bo used
by tho asylum, AND IT WILL NOT BE ABANDONED.
In tho samo spirit wo commond Marion county men who
tako n stand against striking down educational institutions
(n othor parts of tho stato.
Maroln county people aro a unit against removal or aban
donment of ANY INSTITUTION LOCATED AT SALEM.
Can any Marion county man in tho logislaturo or out of it
tako tho position that ho wants to treat anothor part of tho
stato to a dose that ho doos not want to tako himsojf?
WHY STRIKE DOWN OR ABANDON ANY INSTITUTION
OF AN EDUCATIONAL CHARACTER?
If any stato institution is not as good as wo think it ought
to bo, mako it bottor. BUT DO NOT STRIKE DOWN
WHAT WE HAVE.
But do not imagine that Marion county is sacred and holy
ground, and that we can havo now institutoins for old ones
AND AT THE SAME TIME STRIKE DOWN THOSE IN OTH
ER COUNTIES.
' So fai as Marion county is concornod ,rocoiving about
threo-fourths of all appropriations mado in this stato, no
Marlon county mombor lias a moral or political right TO AT
TACK OR STRIKE DOWN OR REFUSE TO DECENTLY AND
REASONABLY MAINTAIN any existing state institution in
any othor part of this state .
Tho Marion county hog has boon long enough thrown in
our face.
Wo havo boon mado tho subject of just criticism and un
just criticism boforo tho rest of tho stato LONG ENOUGH, and
on behalf of fair-minded peoplo of Marion county this protest
