A Salem man who has climbed the
ladder of fame as a caterer to the
public in the way of amusements and
diversions is Dad Geler, as he is pop
ularly known. First ho had a
little old hand corn-popper, and later
a small steam englno popper, and
next a 11500 popcorn machine on
wheels. This machine was the sub
ject of newspaper controversy, action
by the city council, and later of spe
cial attention by the mayor. But
through it all, Dad Geler kopt Bunny
tempered nnd went on shining shoes,
selling popcorn, peanuts and news
papers. He next blossomed out with
u poolroom on State street, in con
nection with his shining parlors, und
wnen the upper story of the large
building in which the Salem Hard
ware Company id located became va
cant, Dad Geler saw an opportunity
he long had sought. He decided to
fit up that large room for a mag
nificent amusement parlor such as
this city had nover seen. He spent
about 13000 on the interior finish
nnd decorations, and put in a bril
liantly lighted and equipped billiard
nnd poolroom, with eight new tablos
of standard size, where the lovers of
that sport can have all the advant
ages of n perfectly nppolntod nmuso
inont room abovo the streets and out
of the way of the public. Those
rooms aro open day and evenings,
and every Wednesday aftornoon the
ladles have free use of the tables.
It Is expectod that n groat many
billiard exports among tho fair sex
will be developed in these favorable
surroundings, for Mr. Gelor has de
termined to lonve nothing undone to
make the place pleasant nnd attract
ive to both ladles and gontlemen.
There will bo no rough conduct al
lowed, and the proprietor solicits the
patronage ot tho vory hlgnest class
of people. He wishes the public a
Merry Christmas and extends them
a cordlnl Invitation to visit tho finest
plnce of tho kind In the Cnpital City.
Few mon havo mado a harder fight
to come up through tho ranks from
nmaii beginnings inan una ueier nna
ho Is certainly to bo congratulated
on his magnificent success. lie is a
man of energy and entorprlso, und
it Is the wish and hope of his friends
that his days of boot-blacking aro
ovor. Of indomitable will and cour
age, he is a man who deserves suc
cess in any walk of life, and ho does
woll whatovor ho starts out to do,
and this Inst venture will undoubt
edly prove a great success.
