Now York, Dec 12. That the wo
men of England who are fighting for
suffrage will get what they want Is
the opinion of Miss Gertrude Ather
ton, the California novelist, after a
dtsousslon of the social problems of
England Is facing today,
"The English women aro lu deadly
oarnest," declared Miss Athorton,
"and equal suffrage Is coming lu
England ns suro as fate. And when
they get It they are going to make It
hot for tho men, for they aro greatly
In tho majority, and will bo able to
out-vote the men on any question
they choose to advocate.
"English women do not get tho

Bister, Englishmen, of course, aro
polite, and have good manners, but
thoy do not bestow upon their wo
mon all tho little attentions that are
common in this country. Tholr at
titude is ono of stolid Indifference,
rather than ono of tender regard, of
secure superiority, rather than eagre
solicitude. Englishmen are lacking
In tho knowledgo of the small chiv
alries. "Of course, the reason for this con
dition is obvious; thoy do not com
mand consideration where they out
number the men, as they do In Eng

relief .from long subjugation that
English women are so aroused over
tho fight for equal suffrage. And
when they get into the saddle, why
they will run things."
