IMPROVEMENTS
ON WILLAMETTE
Tlio Oregon City Transportation
Co. Is now making final preparations
for tho water business botweon the
different towns along the river, as far
up as Corvnllls. The company bus
made vast Improvements - to their
warehouses nnd stopping places along
tho Wlllnmotto, In order to afford
(he best of accommodations to the
shlpporo and to the passenger public
in general. Several of their docks
woro washed out during last winter,
or damaged considerably.
Tho holp to oporato tho river bonU
this season Is abundant, such aa deck
hands, cooks and stewards, and the
company have undergone no difficul
ty so far In filling up their working
forco this senon, as was tho case
last.
Tho government dredge nnd smg
puller, Mathnlctnn, deserves high
prnlso from tho navigation company
for tho splendid work they accom
plished on tho stream betweon horo
nnd Portland. In former years .ho
Willamette river was In such a con
dition thnt the boats woro mooting
with difficulties on every trip. Sand
and gravel bars woro arising nbovo
tho surface in many places, nnd thoso,
combined with tho collection of large
Bnnga nt different points, mndo
fitonmbontlng an almost Impossible
undertaking, especially during the
low water season. Tho Mathalomn
romoved all those hindrances, at tho
urgent request of tho boat pcoplo
and their patrons, nnd trnvol Is com
paratively easy now.
Tho O. C. T. Co. boats began tho
season of heavy trafllc in good shape,
and nro withstanding tho extra work
in flno condition. Tho hop shipments
aro now coming in thick nnd fnst
from tho upper rlvor country, nnd
theso, in connection with tho potato
nhlpmonts and liny, glvo tho bont
pcoplo all tho work they can hnndlo.
Tho passenger service on tho rlvor
now has been mndo moro convenient
and stonmors arriving from nbovo
carry good-sized pnusongor lists. Tho
imssongor trndo coming from points
along tho rlvor toward Portland Is
nlso picking up wonderfully.
Tho Willamette has not aa yet
raised to a steady boating otago, ow
ing to tho dry wenthor, but, from ap
pearances, tho rlvor peoplo expect to
bo ablo to raako regular trips up rh or
beforo long.
