DRUG AND
ROB MAN
IN AOTO
(United Press Loasod Wire.)
San Francisco, Dec. 2, Tho police
today aro Investigating tho peculiar
Incidents surrounding tho kidnaping
of II, B. Elder, western representa
tive of tho Allls-Chnlmors Pumping
Company, who was taken Insensible
In an autontobllo to San Joso yester
day by four men, one of whom calloJ
himself "Frank Martin," and Insist
ed that ho was tho son of formor Po-
llco Captain John Martin, of this city.
Tho qunrtot woro arrested at Santa
Clara on complaint of William A.
Hans-en, tho chauour, who Bays ho
drove tho party, with Elder, down tho
ponlnBitla yesterday morning, and
saw Elder robbrd of a draft of $375,
a diamond pin, a fountain pon and a
Jowoled match box. Hanson says that
Eldor was drugged In tho Cutter sa
loon on Marlcot street, and was In a
stupiflcd and holplcos condition on
tho rldo from San Francisco to Santa
Clara.
Hansen sayB that, when ho was
summoned from tho Pioneer garago
at G o'clock In tho morning, ho found
four "rough looking" mon apparently
trying to tako caro of a drunkon man.
Ho rocolved his ordors to drlvo to Snn
Jose, and sob out for that city. Ho
says that ho noon gucaicd that some
thing was wrong, as ho found tho
four mon Industriously going through
Elder's pockotJ. Martin, ho says, ex
plained that Eldor had a chock on Ills
person which ho had promised to on
dorso, so that thoy could roach Wat
sonvillo. Hansen says that ho caw
Eldor's othor valuables romoved, and
thlo, ho says, prompted Martin to
say to him:
"Keop qulot anJ stand in with us,
and wo will glvo you c. rako-off on tho
mouoy. Don't stop at San Joso or
any big placo."
It wnB their desire to avoid bolng
noticed, says Hanson, that cauood
them to eat tholr meal at Santa Clara
nnd glvo him his opportunity, under
tho dlsgulso of sooklng for gasoline,
to summon tho police to arrest Eldor's
"frlonds."
All four prisoners woro arraigned
In Judgo Qlondonning's court In Santa
Clara on a grand larceny chargo,. and
tholr preliminary hearing wa3 set for
December IB. In default of $2000
ball thoy woro kopt in tho town Jail.
Eldor, whon brought back to this
city, had recovered onough to glvo
his account of tho peculiar nnlr. Ho
says that ho met tho four mon In tho
saloon early In tho morning, and ho
is confident that a poworful drug wa9
administered to him in that placo at
that tlmo, oa ho has no recollection of
what transpired after that. Ho Is
vory grateful to Hanson, who, ho
says, took a bwIous risk In calling tho
police and rescuing him from his kld
napors. o
