Dr W. H. Lytic, who Is n gradu

CRATER LAKE RIVAL
OF Y09EMITK VALLEY
The new Crater lake, National
park, In Oregon, already bids fair to
rival as a resort for tho tourists the
famous Yoseralte valley. People aro
beginning to visit In great numbers,
attracted by the unique and spec
tacular scenic features which It of
fers, nnd the approach Wit, hitherto
somewhat difficult, Is being made
much easier by a railroad now In
process of construction.
Crater lake gets its name from the
fact thnt it occupies tho crater of
an extinct volcano. FlVo miles In
diameter nnd nearly circular In
shape, It Is tho deepest body of
fresh water In Amerlcn. Soundings
havo fixed Its depth nt 2,000 feet.
Only ono lnko In the world, that of
Baikal, Is deeper by 400 feet. In
other respocts, however, it is alto
gether unique. Encircled as It is by
almost vertical cliffs, which nre re
flected In the clear nnd brllllan blue
of the water, Its presents to tho eyo
a spectacle unaurpnssod.
As n great natural and scenic fea
ture of this' country Crater lake
ranks with Niagara falls and the
G-and Canyon of the Colorqdo. It Is
un'quo nnd In Hb way unrivaled.
There nre in tho United States) hun
dreds of extinct volcanic craters, but
this h our only great one.
Think of It' This mighty hole In
the summit of tho Cascade range is
nearly six miles In diameter and
over two-thlrdB of a mile In depth.
Onco upon n time It was filled with
boiling lava Today It contains a
beautiful lake of fresh watdr. which
lako Is encircled by n ring of precip
itous cliff- from 500 to 2500 Jot
high without break or outlet.
Tho extraordinary depth of the
lake naturally led . to a widespread
popular bollef to tho effect that It
had no bottom. It Is a famlt'ar kind
of deltiBlon. Any small body of
water, wherever found, whoso bot
tom is beyond reach by tho longest
Ashing line In sure to gnin tho repute
of being bottomless. Within two
mlloi of Now Haven, Conn., Is a
cleft In the hills that Is occupied by
a largo pond called Lnko Saltonstnll.
Though considerably loss than 200
feet In dcoth, It Is declared by peo
ple who live In Its neighborhood to
havo no bottom. No wonder, then,
thnt Crater lake, with an nctunl
depth of 2,000 feet, Bhould be
Imagined to posscos no floor what
