Demarcation of Alaska Boundary.
It is about five years slnco1 the
Alaska boundary tribunal In London
happily settled the dispute between
England nnd this country. There
was no misunderstanding with re
gard to COO miles of the boundary
between Canada and Alaska, which
had been, defined ns extending from
Mount St. Ellas to tho Arctic- ocean
on tho 1,41st meridian of west longi
tude rrom Greenwich. The conten
tion related to the regular boundary
nl-o about GOO miles long, from Mt.
St. Ellas southeasterly to nnd
through the Portland canal, delim
iting ithe,nnrrow coast strip of
southeastern Alnskn.
In the spring of 1904, a few
month's after tho decision of tho
London tribunal, O. H. Tittmann,
representing the United Stntes, and
W. P, King, on behalf of itho British
government, began the delimitation
of that part of the boundary which
had been In dispute. The difficult
work, it is oxpcqteJ, will be complet
ed this season. Tho commissioners
have fixed trigonometrically nil the
peaks Indicated by the tribunal ex
cepting two near Mount St. 1311ns,
thoso in the region between Whiting
river and Devil's thumb, and some of
the penks south of ithe Unuk river.
The turning points of the water
boundary In Portland canal aro also
to be fixed this season by reforenco
to points on Bhore.
The work has been slow nnd ard
uous on account of tho nature of
tho country and the Inadequacy of
our topographical knowledge of
largo parts of It. On tho whole, tho
boundary line lies nmld pcrpotrual
snow nnd Ice, except where It dropi
abruDtly to tho valleys, only to rise
again Into tho snow regions.

address before tho American Phil
osophical society that it had been tho
business of tho commissioners to
Identify nnd establish tho geographi
cal position of tho peaks which tho
tribunal had marked as the moun
tains contemplated by tho treaty of
1825; also to mark by vlslblo mon
uments, wherever posstvlo, tho turn
ing points of tho lino, nnd to doflno
and describe tho lino between the
points selected by tho tribunal. In
tho co u r bo of this work It was nec
essary to mnko n complete survey
through 120 miles of conintry which
was practically unknown, nnd to se
lect mountain peaks within certain
prescribed limits to dcflno tho boun
dary. Tho passes, valleys and river
crossings, with n few exceptions,
havo now been monumentcd on tho
boundary line.
Tho boundary crosses tho summit
of Mount St. Ellns and other high
peaks of tho St. Ellas Alps nnd tho
Falrweather range. When tho work
Is completed all tho boundary pcako
will bo connected by n continuous rl
nngulntlon, nnd tho intervening
, rtrctches will bo so monumented
that thoro will bo no opportunity for
disputes to-nrlso such as were oc
casioned by tho dlspovory of gold on
itho frontier between Washington,
