Modem Turnstiles to Do Used at
Gates of Oregon State Fair.
An electric turnstile which Is op
erated by dropping a coin in -a slot,
and which counts o,vory porson pas
sing through and records the num
bor In tho secretary's office, is tho
latest Invention for handling the
great crowds entering a modern ex
position grounds, and the appliance
will bo used by the management of
the Oregon stnto fair, which will bo
hold this year from September 14
to 19.
Six of these electric turn3tlles
have Leon purchased by tho manage
ment of the fair, nnd four will be
installed at the main entrance to
the grounds and two at the entrance
to tho grandstand enclosure. The
machines nro the identical ones used
at tho gates of the St. LottU world'j
fair In 1904.
Tho appliance "will do away with
tlckot sollerB and gate keepers nnd
other employes at tho entrance. It
will bo necessary to have a man on
tho outaldo.to make chnngo as tho
slot will not admit any other coin
than a half dollar. Men will also
be needed to watch tho crowd and
see that no lead rings or other coun
terfeit coins nro introduced in to tho
slot.
Tho vlsltdr must hovo his 50-cent
pleco ready, but aside from that he
will bo put to no Inconvenience Ho
hands tho coin to tho man at the
gnto, who drops It In tho slot. This
turnB tho stile nnd ndmits ono per
son. Tho Btilo Is Immediately
locked until another coin In dropped
In.
Each turning of the stllo la re
corded fly n mnchlno which adds tho
nuinbor of persons admitted. The
number Is nlso recorded by electrical
connection In tho ofllco of tho secre
tary, or at any other point on tho
grounds. At midnight ench day tho
officials of tho fair will know exactly
how mnny visitors hnvo pnssod
through tho gates during tho day.
Formerly It was lmposslblo to
count tho big crowds accurately, and
tho attondnnco could only bo esti
mated. Tho now turnBtllo hns been
tested nt tho fair grounds nt Snlom
nnd has been found to work perfect
ly In ovory detail.
Tho only difficulty will bo tho fnll
uro of visitors to tho fair to bring
tho right chnngo, but nrtor tho first
tiny or two, whon fnlrgoers hnvo bo
como familiar with tho now systom,
no further trouble Is expected.
