SHEEP DIPPING LAW
(Pendleton Tribune.)
Fresh trouble is brewing between
tho Washington and Oregon .sheep
men over tho law which requires all
sheep brought into tho state to bo
dipped. The range Involved Is tho
Wenara government reservo which
has been a herder's storm center for
eOToral years.
Attorney H. C. Dryson of Walla
Walla came down yesterday and filed
the caso for tho Washington sheep
men, asking for a temporary Injunction-
against the. Oregon state
sheep Inspector to prevent his hav
ing tho Washington sheep on tho re
serve dipped until the .case shall bo
tried upon Its merits before Judgo
Dean of the circuit court.
Mr. Bryson said yesterday that the
Oregon law did not requlro the dip
ping of sound' shoep aftor August
1; ithat tho Washington sheop on the
reserve had been duly Inspected and
found to bo in good condition; that
water was low on tho resorvo, and
that ho considered tho enso one of
selfishness on tho part of Oregon
sheepmen.
Another Side to tltc Subject.
W. II. Lytlo, howovor, puts tho
mattor In a different light when the
Btato sheep inspector shows up the
law to tho effect that all sheep must
ho dlppod onco a year and that .the
reason for dipping tho Washington
sheep at' tho present tlmo is that tho
timo was extended from August 1 to
September 1.
At Alio proper tlmo tho Washing
ton sheepmen woro ordered to do
their dipping nnd woro propnrlng for
It, but Forester Schmltz forbade It
bolng dono on tho reaorvo. This do
layod matters until tho Orogon stato
Inspector wroto to tlo head of tho
forestry oulco at Washington. Tho
lettor brought forth an immcdlato
revocation of Schmltz's decreo. Tho
way being clear, thoroforo, Lytlo pro
poses to go ahead with tho (Hoping
Tho law reforrod to by Mr. Dryson
rognrdlng .tho first of August no tho
limit, aftor which sheop need not
bo dipped, admits of an extension of
tho tlmo In caso It Is necessary to do
so. Tho action of Forostor Schmltz,
who haa his ofllco In Walla Walla,
compolled tho extension of tho tlmo.
Tho Intont of tho law la to havo tho
sheop dipped onco each yoar for tho
sako of tho health of all tho flocks
on tho rango. This policy was heart
ily approved of by tho head ofllco of
tho forest sorvlco In tho letter writ
ten to Alio Oregon trtnto Inspector.
Judgo Qllttlnnd had not glvon
Ills decision yosterdny ovonng, but
It Is probnblo that ho will find tho
Washington mon entitled to tho
Kompomry rontfnlnlng order until
Judgo Doan roturns to hear tho case
