After a careful Inquiry of farmers
raising large tracts of wheat in
different sections around this city
concerning the spring grain, no se
rious Infections have boon observed
so . far lu the growth of the wheat
proper, but In several tlelda veatch
has sprung up and owing to the
voatch seed being about tho same size
nnr! welcht ns n wheat berry sepa
rating the two will be somowhnt dif
ficult. Smut nnd rust have not
jhowed up so far. ?nd the "black
plngue" as it Is called, w'll not dis
turb the farmer! In this vicinity this
wason, as the grain at present has
growth sufficient to overcome the
inky substance, and the rtrt, which
is not so disastrous as the smut, wlij
hnrillv show ut unless thero is a
rainfall followed by very warm sun
shine, which condition tends to
crack the stalk of the grain thus stop
ping the flow of snp to tho wheat
head. Smut Is probably tho most
destroying fungus In existence. It
not only destroys the wheat for mil
ling purposes, but It can get such
a start ns to cause stock to turn
nway from their feed.
