A very disastrous runaway oc
curred yesterday nfternoon when the
flno driving horse of P. W. Reyelti,
the proprietor of the South Commer

the buggy running on her heels.
The accident took plnce while Mr.
nnd. Mrs. Royeltz woro returning
from n trip In Polk county, and
while descending the steep hill near
the Wallace place, the hold-back on
tho harness gave away letting tho
rig run on to tho nnimnl's heels
causing him to plunge forward
brenklng the belly-band. Mr. Reyeltz
did nil in his power to stop tho
frightened nnlmnl, but seeing it wn
useless, told his wife to Jump which
she did bruising herself in sevcrnl
places. Reyeltz held to the rig for
n mile or so rore, and finding nil
chances of stopping the horEe gone,
Jumped from the rig Just ns It was
at the top of another hill.
Tho horse ran ns far ns the blnck
smith rhop nt the Intersection of
Chemeketa nnd Commercial streets,
whero he ran into a telephone pole
on the corner, tearing a wheel from
tho r!g; then went up .Chemeketa to
Liberty street and sojtth around the
block to Commerclnl again nnd then
north toward the barn In which ho
is kept. A Snlem man, who grabbed
the bridle just at 'this point, lost his
hold causing the horse to shy into
the front plate glnss of Mover's mn
