SPEECH OF DUNN
1 NOMINATING BRYAN
r
Crises arise in'jthe life of nations
which endanger 1 1 their 'institutions
and, at times, imperil, the advance of
civilization.
Every peoplelthnt lins left Its im
press upon history has faced such
orlses.
In most Instances, where grave
'dangers have threatened the safety
of the state, some great character,
some master mind has been found,
produced as it wore by the condition?
themselves, with capacity to direct
aright the energies of the people.
This was true of the ancient
world; it has been true of the mod
ern world; it is true of this republic.
We have such a crisis to meet to
day. The favor-seeking corporations
have gradually strengthened their
hold upon the government until they
now menace popular institutions.
The question 1b, whether this gov
ernment shall bo restored to the
control of the people and be ad
ministered In the interest of all, or
whether it shall remain an instru
ment in tho hands of the few for
levying tribute upon all tho rest.
In his special messngc to congress
Inst winter President Roosevelt de
clared, substantially, that certnhi
wealthy men who have become enoi
motiBly rich by oprcsslng tho wngo
earner, defrnuding tho public and
practicing all forms of iniquity, hnvo
banded together, and by tho unlim
ited use of money, endeavor to se
cure freedom from restraint and to
overthrow and discredit all who lion-o-tly
administer tho law.
That tho methods by' which these
men have acquired their great for
tunes can only bo Justified by n sys
tem of morality, that would permit
every form of criminality, 'every
form of violence, corruption and
fraud.
For many years, and especially
during the last 12 years, these very
men have been in control of the Re
publican pnrty; they have flnnnced
every campaign of that party for a
quarter of a century.
These exploiters of the people,
whom the Preldent has so scathing
ly denounced, hnvo given their en
thuslactic support to tho Ropubllca l
-nndldntes and policies.. They laid
tbelr hands upon the trust funds of
Insurance companies nnd other cor
porations nnd turned tho plunder
over to the Republican committee.
The money thus filched from the In
nocent nnd helples?, to purchase Rc
publ'cAn victory, has not been re
paid. '
And whoro do wo find theio men
todny? Whore aro the "swollen for
tunes" of which we havo heard so
much? Just where wo would expect
to find them supporting ho Re
publican ticket nnd furnishing tho
sinews of war for the Republican
committee, ns usual.
"Tho platform adopted by the
lato Republican convention shows
what tho Republican party in truth
represents. In framing the plat
form, every genuine reform- which
the present has advocated wrs
scorned and repudiated. Tho "Wis
consin delegation asked that one or
two reform planks be pluced in the
platform, and for its pnlns was de
nounced a Democratic. Tho conven
tion by a vote of eight to one refund
to approve those policies which the
PresUent for four years has been
urging upon his party. Tho mask
of hvpocrlsy has been torn from the
'nee rf those who protend to favor
he reforms advocated. by the presi
de, and 't is now apparent why the

Tho Democratic party has many
distinguished men who might be
chosen ns our standard bearer; but
it has one mnn who above qll others
po?:3EeB tho nece3Bary qualifica

this leadership.
He is a man whoso nomination
will leave no doubt as to whore our
party stands on every public ques
tion. His genius for, state-craft Is
Bhown by tho constructive work he
has dono In proposing reforms, and
by the ability with which ho has
fortified his position. But we may
go farther.
A few month? since ho visited the
principal nations of tho world. He
came In contact with tho loading
minds of Christendom, and tho world
abroad recognized his greatness and
paid him that tribute Justly due to
men of .high attainments.
In the most distinguished peace
convention thnt has assembled in re
cent years, he proposed a plan,
which. If ndoptcd, would provo more
effective than any arbitration treaty
that has yet been mndc, and by his
influence ho secured its approval by
tho representatives of tho 20 lend
ing nations thcro nsscmbled.
Is ho thoroughly Informed regard-,

for nearly 20 years havo been a part
of tho political literature of the na
tion. Is ho Blncere, bravo and de
termined? Even his polltlcnl op
ponent? now admit thnt he Is.
I have had a close porsonal ami
political acquaintance with this man
whoso nnmo Nebraska presents, since
he entered polltlcnl life. I can t03
tlfy from observation ns to his po
lltlcnl conduct before ho was known
to fame. Ho was honest, bravo and
unyielding then; ho 1b honest, brave
and unyielding now.
Honesty is inherent in him, Ho
was an honest lawyer boforo ho en
tered politics. Ho was hono3t In his
political methods beforo his state
manshlp waB recognized by tho na
tion; and ho has been honest
throughout Ills polltlcnl career.
His convictions havo boon his po
litical creed. Ho has impressed thoso
convictions. upon othors, not by dic
tation, but by arguments addressed
to tho Judgment and tho conscience.
Believing in tho ultimate triumph
of tho right, ho has never examined
questions from tho standpoint of ex
pediency. He has never Inquired
whether a political prlnclplo was
popular; It haB been Bufllclont for
him to believe that It wns right.
He has been a consistent champion
of tho resorvod rights of tho states..
He favored tho election of senators
by direct vote before tho House of
Representatives ever acted favorably
upon the subject. Ho championed
tariff reform when the West was
tho hot-bed of protection.
Ho favored an Income tax before
tho Income tax law wns written. He
attacked the trusts when Republi
can leaders were donying that any
truets existed. He advocated rail
road regulation boforo tho crusade
against rabatos and discrimination
began.
He has always been the friend of
labor, and. was among the first to
urge concllntlon between labor and
capital. He began to oppose gov

decade ago. He announced his op
po ition to ImperiaMsm before any
other mnn of prominence had ex

it is today a. natlonnl lssuo and sup

Ho ha3 long ndvocated legislation
which will secure publicity as to

Ho believes in pence in univers
al Chrhtian peace. He believes the
destiny of nations should be determ
ined, not by wars, but by applying
the principles of Justico and human

Though these principles hnvo met
with uncompromising opposition
from the special interests, .he haB re

Through year3 of unparalleled po

Ideals nnd to his fellow men has
been nbundnntly shown. His refusal
to surrender his convictions, though
subjected to nbusos, denunciation
and vindictive opposition such as
few public men In nil history have
been compelled to withstand, is am
ple proof of Ills superb courage.
His career proves that successful
leadership is determined by the suc-
co?s or failure of grent principles
rather than by election to high of
