THE PIONEERS.
Hall to tho brave old pioneers,
Heroes truo were they,
They've bnttlos fought and wonders
wrought;
They blnzcd tho way.
With faces turned toward tho west
On, and on, still on they pressed,
O'er hill nnd plain or mountains.
high,
O'er burning snnds, 'ncnth tropic
sky;
Disease, nor denth, nor deserts wide,
Could stay tho ever moving tide,
But on, and on, yet on they go,
DcBpito the wild, relentless foe,
Who, lurking in some hidden glade,
Oft a bloody onset made,
With wnrclub, bow and demon yell
As If to storm tho gates of hell;
They battled tluiB by night or day,
Then laid tho fallen ones away,
And on tho morrow vows renew
And still their westward way pursue.
No hope of rest for them con be,
Until they reach the sunset sen;
So on, and on, and on they go,
Tho watchword over "Westward,
Ho!"
But many days of grief nnd tenrs,
Were known to these old pioneers,
Ero two thousand miles they spnnnod
To rench this fair and goodly Innd,
But visions bright seemed more than
truo
When Waldo Hills burst Into view.
Their tents they pitched now horo
now thoro,
With Gladsome tears, and thankful
prayer,
For lo, thoir wanderings now sliou'd
ceaso
And life henceforth flow on in peaco.
Ilnrrah for tho grand old pioneers.
Hurrah for tho deedB they done,
Ring o'er these hills a thousand'
cheers
For tho victory they have won.
