Nell Gwynno was tho opening bill,
of tho Georgia Harper compnnyfl
which began Its four-nlghU' en
gagement In this city at the Grand
last evening.
Tho play whs well' produced, and
the acting throughout was good.
Miss Harper In tho role of Noll
Gwynno far outshono all the other
lights of the company, although Jo
seph Dctrlck as Chnrles the Second,
gave a very . creditable performance.
Tho, minor -parts wero alBO woll sus
tained by, tho several actors.
rNell Gwynrio" is ono of the best
plnys of Its kind, and contains some
excellent situatldns, which 'for tho
most pnrt wore vory woll handled.
Tho groat climax in the third act,
and the action leading up to it, Is nn
excellent example of dramatic con
struction, and imposes upon tho nc
trcsB the dlfllcilt task of portraying
a mixture of comedy nnd vital
seriousness.
In this situation 'Nell dons the
robo of Sir Francis Jeffreys, nnd in
tho guise of tho Chief Justice se
cures tho Information which saves
tho life of her benefactor. Tho
scone, while It is of tho most ser
ious nnturo contains comedy ele
ments which must bo- portrayed. In
this" Miss Harper succeeded romnrk
nbly well. At tho end of tho act
tho disguise is discovered, but Nell
escapes to her carrlago with tho pa
pers, and looking out of tho window
at hor dumbfounded onomles, says
very calmly, "Gentlemen, gentlemen,
to holl with you nil."

When tho bright wnves of WJllamotto
1 Catch tho smile of parting day,
And Its winding banks nro borderol
With tho blossoms of tho May,
And tho evening skies nro crimson
With tho supset's golden glow,,
Then In memory I am roaming
In tho sunny long ago.
Glad Willamette, bright Willamette,
Rushing onward glad and free;
With tho crimson skies above theo
Bringing back old dreams to me.
1
For in fancy I nm roaming
With a chlldndjvinoly fair,
With her bluo eyes soft and smlllng
And her sunny flontlng hair.
Oh, tho joy of that glad springtime
As wo wandered side by side,
And my boyish love was plighted
By Willamette's dimpled tide.
Then once more I seom to wander
With tho child, a mniden grown,
With her eyes of heaven's own nzuro,
Smiling lovellght to my own;
Now those eyes nre closed forevei,
And ench muriunr of thy wave,
Seems to sigh In soft, low accents,
Sad, sweet dirges for thy grave.
Dear Willamette, .loved Willamette;
As thy bright waives turn to gold.
Low and sad I wander by thee,
Dreaming o'er tho dreams of old

A Journal reporter called on Miss
Harper for an Interview yesterday.
He stopped at the hotel desk and
asked if tho octrois were in. "Yes,
second door to tho loft," was the di
rection. "Butporhnps" tho reporter
.suggested, "I had better " "Yes,
you had hotter rap," was tho .an
swer to tho mlsundcrBtood sugges
tion. It scorned n rather informal
prqeecdure, but without further corc
mony tho Journnl representative
went down tho hnll and rapped on
tho door.
"Como" called n vory sweet voice
and tho reporter entered. Georgia
Harper was seated at u table read
ing a magaslno. Sho did not loo
.up nt onco from hor reading, bo tho
reporter began, "I beg your parden:
I nm from tho Journal." Tho ac
tress dropped her reading, "Oh!"
sho cried, "I thought you wero my
husband, or tho mnld. You-you bui
prisod mo."
Tho reporter said ho was sorry.
"You bso" said tho actress with a
half stage gesturo, "you havo caught
mo on nogllgoo." This might havo
been the case but tho reporter
couldn't sco It, unless nmong tho
profession an lmmnculato ahlrt wnUt
of thin whlto stuff 3 considered
nogllee. But tho reporter was no
connoisseur of femalo nttirc, and
said so. This seemed to put Miss
Harper somewhat nt easo,
"I suppoio you want mo to talk,"
sho enld when she had. recovered
somewhat from tto shock.
"Yes, about yourself, If you will."
"I'm afraid you will find that a
very dull subject," replied Miss Har
eor. Tho reportor mumbled some
thing about being willing to take
chances on being interested, and
nfter little hesitation the nctress
consented to talk about horself quite
nt, length. Georgia Harper, by the
wy, is a good talker,
"How did I happen to go on thQ
stage? O, It was all a Joke In the
first place. I never thought of such
a thing until one summer when I
was a gh' I mot Wallah at a summer
resort In New York state. He
thoucht I could mnko srood. and
wanted to give mo.n trial. After I
luumi uui imi- i cuuiu 111:1, 1 iuii in
love with the business, and stayed
with It."
Ml3 Farper has some very defin
ite Ideas about dramatics, One of
the things she doesn't like is a friv
olous piny. "I llko the deeper
plays tho bckt," she said. "Of the
four plays v; shall present here, I
think CamlUe Is best suited to my
tomperment.
This is the first time Miss Har
per hns been In Salem, and she Is
delighted with, the Capital city. "We
have heard of Salem all along the
road, she said, "even' In tho East.
We have hoard about 'your rose9
most of all, and your cherries. Wo
heard about them way down In Los
Angeles. I wouldn't believe tho
stories I heard about the roses In
this country, but I am convinced
now,"
While the actre3s was going Into
ecstasy over the roses qf Salem, tho
dor quietly opened and her husband
entered. Although tho husband's
name Is Mr. Harper tho stage prefix
of the actress is Miss. Miss Har
per's explanation of how she had ad
mitted a newspaper man thinking It
was her husband did not seem 10
hnvo any disquieting effect upon that
gentlemnn. Perhaps he was used to
comedy situations.
"Thlj is ono of the finest looking
towns I evsr saw," he sold. "How
big is it?"
Tho reporter gave as big a number
as his conscience would nllow. r
"About what I thought,'" said
Mr. Harper. "You'vo got a flno
theater for this slzo town, too." Then
li9 nlso began to prnlso tho roses. 1
The convocation had drifted far.
from tho stngo when tho reporter (
took hlB lenve. Tho actor folk weroi
engrossed with tho beauties of tho
real world hero, and for tho tlmo be
ing had forgotten the mimic world
