play "Lonesome Town," which mado
a tremendous hit when It was first
produced horo and since has been
seen in many American cltlcB. When
a "California Night" wbb given in
New York recently by tho comedians,
Kolb and Dill, thuy choso "Lonesomo
Town" as tho production nnd Its re
vival was greeted with great ap
plause on Broadway. Tho play was
the story of a California boom town !
of 25 years ago and wns a most
amusing picture of the conditions
wheh prevailed at that time.
Of a different and more important
character, bowovqr, wore his plays,
"Tho Hills of California" and "Da
mon and Pythias." These were
dramas produced in San Francisco
10 critical audiences who snw in
them tho work of ccnlus. "The
HJl's of California" particularly I
was a striking p'ay relating as it did
to tho oventB of the golden days, "thu
days of M9."
The "Black Cat," a sketch pro
duced on the Orphcum circuit and
many other smaller plays, were writ
ten by him.
Ho was also the author of "I. O
U.," a play which was produced with
succeis. Brusio was well known as
an after-dinner speaker, as well as
a campaign orator. Ho made ad
dre'Bea in many sections of the couu
try in the McKlnley and Roosevelt
campaigns.
Bruise practiced law in Arnador
county and was sent to the asiembly
from there. He later went to Sac
ramento to Jlvo and was sent to the
assembly from there. He was ap
pointed secretary of the statt rail
road commission in 1003.

American powder men working on
the canal at Calnlto Mulato were
killed recently by a charge of dyna
mite that waa explodod by a flash of
lightning.
The men, Clifford J. Coggon and
J. P. Roche, had Just set the charge
and it was ready to bo fired as oea
as the squad had quit work at
O'clock. The wire leading to the
fuie had sot been connected to the
battery but a thunder torm had
charged the air with electricity and
tho wires were afected so that a
spark set on the powder.
