Stanford University, April C.
(To the Editor.) An "editorial an.
peared In Tho Oregonlan a short
time slnco regarding tho rccont dis
turbance hero and a good ninny ot
as arc Just beginning to realize tho
great amount of notorloty our alma
malcr Is receiving at tho hands of
the press of this country, particular
ly of the NorthwoBt. Ab I .think tho
newspapers generally do not wish to
misrepresent us, I thouglit that The
Oregonlan should understand tho
situation, not from -tho professors'
standpoint, but also from .tho stfi-
dent body view.
I wish to Bay right hero, and most
emphatically, that wo are not n
"bunch of drunkards," as Tho Ore
gonlan had It, nor aro wo Btrlvlng to
gain the right to act disorderly or
become Intoxicated, without being
panlshcd for It. Wo aro not protes
ting against tho prohibition of
drunkeness -wo heartily bollevo in
It and favor tho abolition of it, if
inch ever ousted hero. Personally
i know of no ono student nt this
time, whom I or any fair-minded
man would cnll a "soak" or a
''drunkard;" but wo are protesting
sgalnst what wo bollovo to bo hnrsh-
nm, lujustlco' and unfairness. It
night be well to state that tho re-
fort In regard to drinking at tho
university Is terribly exaggerated.
Drinking In modorntlon docs occur
purely In a spirit of levity. Tho
parado of March 12 aroso spontan
eously, without being pre-arranged
or orgnnized, In tho evening several
hours after tho student nffairs com
niittoo had sent out its "edict" on
Btudents' behavior. To this no ono
would, probably tako serious offense,
except .that It was dictatorial, rnthor
obscuro, but most of all, uncalled
for. ThlB parade nt first seemed ,
to be bound for nowhere in particu
lar, tho parader8 merely singing col
lego songs nud giving college yells.
Somo ono suggested that Mr. Clarke,
tho head of tho stud&nt affairs com-
mltteo, bo visited and requested .to
mako a speech. Ho not bolng nt
home, .tho paradors marched
through tho library and Bhortly af
terwards dispersed.
This, wlthor.it going Into tho de
tails, was tho now "famous parado"
not ono bit of property was dam
aged, nothing happened at which
nuyono could bo dcoply offended,
and in fact it amounted to nothing.
The collogo dally appor considered It
of ho llttlo Iniportnnco thnt tho pa
rado was not montioncd until It bo
camo notorious later.
For this insignificant, trlvlnl of-
fonso, If It mny rightfully bo called
an offonso, 12 mon were suspended
from tho university. Not tho loaders
but 12 who woro noticed by a
"spotter." TIiIb wns cortalnly un-
oa tho campus at times, but vory boI-I fa. for tho 12 suspended for tho
dom Is It carried to excess. I defy 'remainder of tho somontcr woro not
anyone to point to a unlvorslty the
tlti of Stanford whoro mornlB aro
Mghcr or tho standard of living
better or nobler than right horo at
Stanford.
When Tho Oregonlan snys, "It ap
pears from tho accounts of thelrt
conduct, that tho Stanford universi
ty students vnluo tho prlvllogo of
riot and debauchery nbovo .tholr ed
ucation," it nllegos that of which it
tho lenders nor was It claimed that
they woro thoy woro picked at
random from tho 2G9 and, again,
tho punishment was far too sovore.
Wo protCBted in nu ordorly and gon
tlomnnly mnnnor to whnt wo consid
ered as unfairness, Injustlco nnd
hnrshnosB, and woro rewnrdod for
our gontlomnnly protest by somo 30
or moro bolng nddpd to tho numbor
oxpollod for this unimportant "pn-
knows nothing, absolutely nothing, rndo."
It Is either deliberately misleading, J rolteruto that wo aro not pro-
Iti patient renders or has boon most
'rightfully misinformed.
Again, Tho Orogonlan says. "Tho
"culty having forbidden thorn .to
drink grog on tho enmpus or got tip
r anywhere else, thoy organized n
monster 'demonstration Jn protost;
wiaded the library, insultod tho dls-
MpUnary commUtoo of tho unlvorsl
tr and BOMKht .to bnllv President
Jordan." Tho nbovo is not only un
ra, but It is again mlslondlng. Tho
Wrado to which Tho Oroconian ro.
'rs was not an organised monster
demonstration ot protest against tho
"sht to got "tlnsy" nnvwhoro. nor

vorstty? Does he Imagine that any
body will credit his silly protest that
tho action of tho student affairs
committee was "dictatorial, obscuro
and uncalled for"; that tho parade
had no object; that no offense was
committed; that 12 Btudents woro
suspended for no ndequato reason?
Is tho young man merely silly or
merely temporarily blinded by con
colt? When he is older, we hope ho will
bo wiser. At this stages of his ex
perience It ls probably useless do
remind him thnt tho notorloty hlB
beloved alma mater Is recolving is
not tho fault of tho nowspnpors, but
of himself and his fellow rioters. If
thoy had behaved themselves prop
erly, nobody would hnve dreamed
that there was a quostlon of drunk
onoss to bo settled nt Stanford; but
slnco tho students, by their rebellion
brought tho mntter promlnontly bo-
for tho public, It hod to bo tlonlt
with by tho press, and wo trust that
Tho Oregonlan, at least, performed
Its duty In tho promises adequate
ly. Does young Bonnott rcnllzo how
fatuous It Is to deny that .thoro la a
"drink quostlon" at Stanford when
President Jordan has admitted that
drink wns at tho bottom of all tho
trouble? Does ho realize how abBiird
It Bounde to say that ho and his com

ordorly protest? They wero expelled
'or breaking tho rules of their col
logo and defying tho faculty nnd
ovory high thinking person In tho
country believes thnt thoy got pre
cisely whnt thoy dosorvo.
Stanford unlvoristy stands n great
deal higher oday than It would
have stood had tho faculty compro
mised this afTalr In any particular.
Tho students who woro oxpollod
havo nobo'dy to blnmo but them
splves, and to whlno over tholr pun
ishment nnd rail at tho nowspnpors
wm not holp thorn nn atom. The
only rational thing for thoni to do
now Is to sot resolutoly nt work, ro-
triovo their past and, if possible
mako mon of themselves. ' Boforo

Tho Orogonlan is always dollght
fully chivalrous to anyone who can
not strlko bnck and It supposed it
"ould ronst a lot of unlvorslty stu

accountability. So it reprosontod
'ho Stanford students, 1000 miles
away, who woro suspended, as as
cliolco lot of drunken and riotous
obols, defying tho authorities, and
making themsolvos a band of out-
aws who woro entitled to no ro

lookod tho fact that hundreds of
'.hoso young mon nro Just as good
morally as tho faoulty that under

that had nothing to do with drunk
enness. Many of thoso mombors of
ho faculty aro thomso'vea no moro

whon it is considered that tho worst
and fraud thief and tho most cor--upt
public official b treated with a
great donl more klndnoes nnd con
sideration thnn thoso young men
from tho best families in the Pacific
northwost. Every Stanford student
who took part in that parade stands

r Is bolng recognized tho world ovor that tho drinking of boor

All onlightonod European nations aro oncouragtng tho manu

to all slncoro lovers ot tomporanco.
Tho United States government has taken a poaltivo Btand In

-All tho great Insuranco companies have contradicted the lies
that havo boon glvon currency through prohibition aourcos thnt
tho drinking of beer was a bar to securing Insurance, and havo
latoly published to tho world at largo tho statement that thoso
drinking beer .moderately (not moro thau two quarts during twon-ty-four
hours) woro tho vory boat of risks. Tho latest British llfo
inauranco reports show that tho ratio of death rato among abstain

Boor ls puro and wholesome, and tho day is not far distant when
It will bo as ;much a part of tho dally subsistence of ovary family
