day night, discussed tho best moans
for fire protection in all of tho
Bchools, with the result that fire es
cape stairways aro to bo put In tho
Grant, Park and Lincoln Bchool
buildings. Tho East school has al
ready two stairways and these are
regarded as sufficient protection.
Plans wero discussed nt the meet
ing for tho beautifying of Bchool
grounds about tho buildings and It
was decided to distribute seeds to
bo planted by tho pupils. This Is in
accordance with tho Ideas of the city

Tho Carpenters' Union last Satur
day night, with almost a full house,
enthusiastically endorsed Statement
No. 1 as being tho doslro of tho plain
people, and as being a stop toward
tho advancmont of electing senators'
by tho direct voto of tho people Tho
resolution, endorsing tho measure,
carried with a shout, and if thoro
were any dissenters, they wero very
quiot. Tho resolution la, as follews:
"Resolved, That wo regard sign
ing Statement No. 1 of tho direct pri

of securing tho election of senators
by tho direct voto of tho peoplo and
will support no candidate for repre

A resolution was also passed at
tho mooting protesting against con
vict labor as resulting in unfair
competition, tho convict's no-pay op
posing tho fair wages asked by labor.
