ON THE ARTS
In a delightful article published
in the March Uncle Remus' Magazine,
Walter Halo dlscus:os the passing
of the- old Nw Orleans and illus
trates the text with h'a own brilliant
pen and Ink sketches.
A meeting in that city some nine
years aso with Josaph Jefferson, Is
recalled in this fashien:
"Here Is an actor who sketches,
father," Bald ono,. of hla sons, as I
was led into tho room he used for a
studio, near Lafayette square, and
though tho warmth, of his welcome
would have been tho samo, I felt that
the introduction meant more to him
than if I hn-d been- an actor .who
golfed or motored or followed tho
conventional diversions that help to
pass our idlo hours.
He was very ilrm in his hellef that
an actor coulil give up his spare timo
to art or music without interfering
with his means of livelihood.
"Was Seymour Haden any tho less
successful ns an etcher because ho
wns a famoni8 Burgeon?-' ho would
say, "or, to go to tho old masters:
wore Bonvcnuto Cellini" and Leonar
do dl Vinci and Michael Angelo dis

and hand, the knowledge of ono
should help tho othor, and I can't see
that my performance, of Rip Van
Winkle tonight will Iofq through tho
fact that I am painting this lanscapo
in tho afternoon."
Ono day toward tho endt of tho
week wo stolp away to tho Old DnBln,
together, armed with paint box, port
