AN" AMERICAN'S IKSOKUTKN
OF A SPANISH BULL FIGHT
My Impression of Mexican bull
flghU are most likely thoso of all
Americans who have witnessed them
how anyone can enjoy seeing man
and beast In conflict, with tho
chances ten to ono In the man's
favor, I cannot understand. In my
estimation any game is devoid of
sport where any one party has an
unequal chance.
A largo party of Americans, in
cluding myself, went over lno Jau
r6x.Old Mexico, Sunday, January
19, to see a bun fight tor the first
time. Tho celebrated Spanish, mata
dor, Gulno, was billed to appear
(salary $4000 tor tho oao perform
aace) and do battlo wtth he "fe
reetouu bct3." We each paid our
ll.St In good American cola and
feus seats in the bleachers, near
the water of a dirty bunch of Greas
ers, , The band played a Spanish air
tho bugles notes sounded, and the
til a began.
Oi)t Marched' the entire bufich ot
lighters la order, the two matadors,
fire plcftdores, and three spearmen,
riding nags that were almost ready
fr Ike soap market. The horses to
oe'McrlKed to the hull's bora's, but
the men fully protected by steel
shields on foot and legs. They
marched around tho ring twico, bow
lag aad waving to the big crowd and
then tho bugle sounds again. They
all htdo behind the barriers, the gate
Is opened, in charges a bull Mad?
Tos. Who would bo with a larbed
fishhook stuck in his back, with red
streamers attached?
Tho hull makes for tho first thing
ho sees a horse. Ho Is met by tho
rider's spear, but keeps on going,
and usually rips tho horso with n
gash as long and wido as your arm.
Tho rider is unhurt. The plcadorcs
run up with their bright colored
banderlllos, ono in each hand, war
ing them at the bull and of course
tho bull follows tho colors and the
plcadorcs, who nimbly sidesteps and
sticks the two barbed spears into the
bull' shoulder. Tho placing of the
banderlllos Is about tho wholo busi
ness, as It reaulros delicate footwork
and a quick oyo.
After these barbs are securely
placed, tho bull Is ready for the
matador. "Butcher Smear," be
decked In gay colors with red capo
concealed a long sword, ho walks
straight up to tho bull who charges
for tho capo, of courso not for tho
man, and all tho man has to do la to
sidestep and tho bull passes' on, turns
land makes another drive, for tho
cape. After tiring the bull till ho
does not caro to tight anymore, tho
matadoro stands immediately in
front of tho bull, takes aim with bis
sword, and just as the bull charges,
plunges the sword Into his neck,'
through hta heart, to tho hilt, aud
tho Mexicans yell with dollght,
throwing their haLu..lnto the rlug,
which is tho Mexican way of show
Ing their appreciation. In tho mean
time, tho Americans turn away in
disgust. An American would de-l
ugnt in seeing mo duii untsn mo
matador, Instead ot the opposite.
This samo program is repeated (
four times. Altogether four bulls
arc butchered. A sickening disgust
ing sight to anyone who admires fair
play and enjoys good -sport.
The bull has no chance whatovor
for life. It's nothing but rank butch
ering. "-
They won't allow prize flchts In
Mexico. They claim Its' brutal.
The ring was crowded with women
and children who yelled with de
light, same as the men. There Isn't
even a semblance ot sport to a bull
fight. Mt Is down right butchering
and a blot on elvilization. It seems
Incredible that such things could oc
cur in this age. Roy Tribue.
