The rotor of the ground was in him, the red earth,
Tho tang and odor of the primal things
The rectltwde and patience of tho rocks;
The gladness of tho wind that fthnkes tho cor.n;
The Justice of the rain that Ioyos nil loavci;.
The pity of tho snow that hides al scars;
The loving klndnoiM of the waysldo well;
The tolerance and equity of light
That. gives an frocly to tho shrinking wood
As tho groat onk, flaring to tho wind
To the grove's low hill ns to tho mnttorhorn
That shoulders out tho sky.
And so Ho enmo
From prnlrlo cabin up to Cnpltnl,
Ono fair Ideal led our chleftnln on.
For ovurmoro lio burned to do IHh deed
W,lh tho nno ntrokn nnd gesture of n It I tig.
He built tho rail pllo ns ho built the stnto,
Touring his nplondld strength through ovory blow,
Tho consclunco of him testing tvory stroke,
To mnko his deed the mfnsuto of n man.
Ho enmo tho cnptnln with tho mighty heart; ,
And when tho stop of onrthqunkn shook tho houso,
Wrenching tho rafters from tholr ancient hold,
Uo hold tho rldgo pole up nnd spiked ngnln
Tho rafters ot tho homo. IIo hold his place
Hold tho long ptirpoio llko a growing troo
Held on through blnmo nnd fnltorod not nt prnlso.
And whon ho fell In whirlwind, ho went down
As when n knlgly codnr, grenn with boughs,
Gods down with a great shout upon tho IiIIIh.

TIMOND FORD HKMP.MIIKUKD HIH FIUF.NDS
Til got many a hard Jolt and onljr Btnlled, and said, well, maybe- the
follow Is right, after all, and I bettor got right myself.
In that spirit he considered the man who went against him In Judg
ment AND KVKN CONDEMNED HIM WHKN UK WAS WRONG. AS
HIS HHEM), and ho even remembered those who had crooscd him at
times.
Mr. Ford denied himself many pleasures and .'deprived himself of
much of this world's comforts. "
His greatest enjoyment wan In his work, and ESPECIALLY IN ANY
LADOH PERFORMED FROM LOVE OF IT.
His greatest work will remain his battle the last year of his life for
tho farmers of Linn county and the whole state. .
He volunteered to take up for them their fight TO MAINTAIN THE
RIGHT TO PETITION FOR THE REFEHENDUM without having to 6e
ho'd down tp the 4echnlcalltles pr scribed by the legislature.
That was a gift In which he also remembers his friends. The farm
ers of Oregon had been his clients on a large scalo.
Ho took up their battle In their hour of. need without' money nnd won
out for them IN ONE OF THE GREATEST LEGAL. CONTESTS IN
THE HISTORY OF THE STATE.
For all his kind a,cta io his friends they remember him In life and will
remember him as long us they live.
i
The friends of Tilmon Ford are many, and they will never grow lesa
in numbers or appericatlon.
IT IS NOT BECAUSE HE OA'E THEM GIFTS, nor because ho set
aside f C000 to buy them Jewelry and gold watches.
It Is for his kindness in remembering him at all that they will fcol
grateful in return.
It is the law of love that KINDNESS HKCJETB KINDNESS AND
ORATITUDE HRINGS A HARVEST OF THE SAME VIRTUE.
Some day. tho friends of Tilmon Ford wilt erect a Btatuo in his honor
and to commemorato his character.
In a few years. It may bo a genoratlon, when time BhatI hnvo
smoothed away the little wrinkled and defects, HE WILL RIS MORE
APPRECIATED.
His work for tho people, his dovMlon to certain ideals and principles
of humanity will nppenr In stronger light.
Tho really rugged nature of tho man will shine forth, and HIS TRUE
DIMENSIONS IN RELATION TO MANKIND WILL DE MANIFEST, and
his atatuo will stand In some public placo.
