The OriMitHco Passed.
After tho longest session In the
history of -the city council, that body
passed an ordinance Intended to
prohibit mercantile establishments of
a transient character from dojng
business In the -city without paying
a high Hccnse. The; ordinance which
wrfs presented by B, H. McGuno in
behalf of n number of mercantile
establishments of the city, provoked
much discussion brut In the end was
passed on suspension of rules. Mayor
Wallace signed tho bill at once mak
ing thp ordinance effective.
In accordance with tho provisions
of the ordinnnco City Marshall Rles
ordered the. new mercantllo clothing
establishment of Paul Strain, which
was advertised, to open for tho first
time Thursday morning,, not to 'do
business unless they complied with
tho new ordinance's provisions and
pnld (tho high license imposed. The
store consequently remained closed
but posters of a sensational charac
ter, denouncing tho notion of the
council In passing tho ordinance,
were placed in front of tho store
on First street. All dny a large
crowd of citizens blocked tho oldo
walk by tho store Interestedly discus
sing tho situation. .Tho storo was
oponcd nt 1 o'clock this afternoon
upon tho ndvlco of Mr. Strain's at
torney. Mr. Strnln wa snrrested nnd
tho ordinnnco will bo to3tcd as to Its
legality In tho courts. -
