THE LEAGUE MAY
PUT UP A TICKET.
(United Press Leased Wlro.)
New York, Feb. 17. Tho national
commltteo of tho Independent
Leaguo will meet in Chicago on
Washington's blrthdny. At that
time a call will bo issued for a na
tional convention which will select
candidates for president and vice
president. In many of tho northern
states, full stato and local tickets
will bo placed in the field.
If tho Hearst party takes this ac
tion, declare Republican politicians,
tho ro&ult will mean a walk-over
for tho Republican nomlncos in al
most every doubtful state. Thermo are
explanations for tho proposed move
ment on the part of the leaguo. Ono
Is that Hearst has definitely broken
off with Bryan, and tlio other is that
Hearst boliovos that tho defeat of
Bryan Is certain, nnd that ho wlshc
to have a clear flold for his party in
tho next national election, bollovlng
that Bryan's defeat would mean a
political disintegration of tho Bour
bons. It la said that Hearst will not
ho ml Ihu ticket this year, but wait
until 1912, wheft h.0 believes the
leaguo will bo tho groat party of op
position to 'tho Republicans.

WORD FOR THE WHEELS.
Thinks Woman's Club Is Standing in
With Street Car Company.
Salem, Or., Feb.' 13, 1908.
EJ. Jeurnal: After a long, hard
days' work yesterday I went down to
tho opera house to tho booster's
meeting, nnd was glad to boo such
a big crowd out, and so much inter
est manifested iti the wolfaro of our
town. Ono tiling, however, to my
groat surprlso, was tho antagonism
shown by tho woman's club to tho
ordlnanco permitting wheels on part
of tho walks of tho town. I cannbt
for tho llfo of mo see whero thcro
will bo any benefit derived or glory
gained by driving ,tho whools from
tho walks, and can soo whoro great
hardship, both physical and finan
cial, will bo engendered. I bog of
itho woman '8 club to just stop and
think what this means. In many In
stances It means tho giving up of po
sitions, whoro tho party wont to
and from work by wheel, and tho dls
tanco Is ,too groat to walk.. It means
anywhoro from ono to 200 cold
lunenca eaten six days out of tho
week, whero warm dlnnora aro now
tho rule. It means long walks for
hundreds of persons to reach tho
car lines, to sny nothing of the car
faro. Taking Into consideration that
Salem Is scattorod over a largo terri
tory, and in many instances a long
tramp to tho business part of town,
or to the nearest car lino, and a wait
of 10 or 15 minutes for a car; nlto
that occasionally It Is raining In tho
winter season. Wo hnvo lived In 8a
lom for throo yonrs, and either my
self or wife havo tho first tlmo to bo
Inconvenienced In tho slightest dq
greo by wheel riders. When wo first
traveled tho streets of Salem and
tho ltttlo bolls tinkled too cloao at
our heols, It was Boniowhnt startling,
but only for a fow tlmos. I soon
found thnt tho rldor dreaded a col
lision moro than I did, nnd that If J
was Inclined to ho sulky and hog nil
tho walk oven, ho was not going to
run Into mo. My first Impression was
that it was a groat privilege Tho
woman's club aro enthusiastic ovor
a now library building. Public li
braries aro designed moro for tho
working classes than othorwlso, and
I will tako tho position thnt tho ques
tion, put to a voto, wheels vo. li
brary, thnt tho whools win. Car fare
six dnys a wook, going nnd coming,
will buy moro books Outright than
tho avorngo laborer finds tlmo to
read during tho yoar. A largo por
cant of tho male riders pay n rond
poll tax, and a wheel, Jn most ensos,
Ih his only convoynnco. Tho mlddlo
of tho strooU most all tho yoar arn
simply no good for n whool, and it Is
on tho walk or abandon tho whoel.
I promimo tho car company would
gladly donate a hnndsomo llttlo Bum,
possibly a stto for tho now library to
hnvo this ordlnanco ropoalod. Now,
Mr. Journal ManN I think this Is trio
Rontlinont of nil tho wheel riders and
laboring peoplo In -this matter, and
I spoak for thorn ns a body, whon I
beg of you to champion this cnusu
for us, and to show that no ono Is
being ImpoBod on or inconvenloncod.
nnd that groat good Is being dally
dtrlvod from this privlloge. Mako
tho ordlnanco strlck nnd tho ponal
ty swift and sovoro to any who may
nbuso It, but do not rule tho wheels
off tho walk Just bocauso sonio nerv
