Tho Oregon Bvorgreon Is tho best
and most profitable blackberry for
garden cultivation. It grows to per
fection In Oregon nnd Washington
and Is getting protty well scattered
over tho mountains and foothills of
tho Pugot sound bnsin. Tho plant
Is trtto to nnmo in that Its leaves re
main green throughout the winter
and there is nevor a season when the
branches are bare. It produces won
derful crop3 of berries and continues
to put out brossoms and mnturo fruits
until lato in tho autumn. Tho fruit
is of a semi-wild flavor and so solid
that it can bo Bhipped for a thou
sand miles and placed on the market
in a fresh condition.
Whero tho plant originated Is ono
of tho unsolved problems. Ono story
Is to tho effect that a missionary dis
covered tho fruit growing in tho Sa-,
moan Islands nnd carried plants to
tho Willamette valley of Oregon nnd
set them in a garden. Prom that bo
glnlng tho plants havo been distrib
uted over the Pacific coast region.
Dut nnother theory Is that tho vines
nro natlvo to tho rainy districts of
tho Pugot eound country. It Is claim
ed, that tho first cultivated berries
woro grown in Puyallup, Washing
ton. Tho originator picked fruits
from his first throe vines for a quar
ter of a century. Ho stated boforo
his doath that ho' had clearly demon
strated thnt tho blackberry would
return ono thousand dollars an ncro
every yoar.
Tho evorg'roon berry hns been tho
making of two thrifty towns in tho
Puynllup valley. Its fruits aro pluck
ed from nearly ono thousand Indi
vidual patches- and shipped In cnt
load lots to tho cities of the Inter
mountain region. Tho surplus Is
handled by two Inrgo canneries nnd
tho demand for tho berries Increases
ovory year. There Is no doubt but
that tho berry will becomo a general
crop In many sections of tho coun
try. It boglns bearing after three
yours from planting nnd continues for
many years. Thoro is nothing mys
terious about tho plant or Its frulU.
It requires no particular enro In
trnn&plnnting or cultivation. Mnny
fine clusters of tho borrlos mny bo
found In tho wooda and socludod
spots of tho western slopo of tho Cas
cades nnd on tho foothills of the
Olympic mountains. Tho Western

PORTLAND BETTER

pnrLson of Admission Indicates
Thnt Alnsko-Yukon-Pnclflc Expo.
slUon Will Bo Big Success.
Soattlo, Jan. 30. (Special Corre
spondence) That a successful expo
sltion can be held on tho Pacific
coast, that tho Yukon- Pacific Expo
sition, which will bo held at Seattle
in 1009, has every chanco of being
an artistic, educational and flnan
nanclal bucccss, is indicated by tho
comparison of tho attondanco fig
ures of tho LowIb & Clark Exposition
held at Portland, Oregon, in 1905
with those of tho Jnmestown. exhibi
tion held at Norfolk, Virginia, In
1907.
Tho ofilclal statement of admis
sions of tho Jamostown exposition
for tho exposition period shows a to
tal of 2,844,452 people who cllckod
tho turnstiles. Portland's total at
tondanco was 2,554,848, or 289,
C04 less than Jamestown's. But
Portland's paid admissions woro 1,
58S,858 against Jamestown's 1,404,
109, or 181,449 moro. Portland
only had 965,996 froo admissions,
whoronu Jamostown had 1,443,043.
When tho size, cost and popula
tion of tho surrounding country in
which tho tho two expositions woro
hold, nro takon into consideration,
'it can bo oaslly seon how sniccossful
tho wostern oxposltlon wns ovor tho
caBlorn one. Portland was a com
parltlvely Hmnll world's fair as com
parod to Chicago, nnd St. Louis, yet
It xlrow about 120,000 pqrsoiiB from
onit of tho Rock Mountains. Princi
pally, most of thoso pooplo camo
west to bo etho country nnd Inci
dentally tho Lewis nnd Clark show,
wltfch was tho mngnot. Tho Alas-ka-Yukon-Paclflc
Exposition will
havo tho samo drawing card bohlnd
It. Tho cost of tho Portlnnd impo
sition was fnr loss thnn thnt of
Jamostown. Tho government build
ing nnd exhibit at Portland woro
valued at about $800,000. Tho gov
ernment spout nbout $2, GOO, 000 at
Jnmestown.
Tho most startling thing about tho
buccosb of tho Low'Js and Clnrk ox
posltlon wn'J tho fnct thnt It only
hnd about 1,800,000 pooplo within
a rndlois of 500 miles from which ftf
draw Uh attendance, whoroas James
town within a radius of 525 miles
had nbout 39,000,000 peoplo. Also
Portland ran for only four nnd n half
months, whllo Jamestown was open
for so von months.
Portlnnd wns ublo to pay back 20
pot cent to Its stockholders nnd wns
ontlruly out of debt by tho middle of
tho oxposltlon. Jnmostown will not
pay bnok anything and Is hopolossly
In debt to the United Statos govern
ment. .
Tho mnnagomont of tho Alnska-Yukon-Pnoillo
oxposltlon figuros con
servatively, from tho oxnmplo sot by
Portland, that tho paid attendance
nt tho 1909 fair will reach 2.500,000
which will make It one of, If not tho
most, successful expositions over
held.

Noah was the founder of

The American people in consequence have
ever since been victims of lard-cooked food
and indigestion.
Lard soaked food is not fit for human
stomachs because lard is made from greasy,
indigestible hog fat, and is bound, sooner
or later, to make trouble for your inner
machinery,
CottoUne is the only rational, national
shortening. It is a pure vegetable product,
and its source (the cotton fields of the Sunny
South) is in striking contrast to the source of
lard (the pig-sty).
CoUolene makes food that any stomach
can digest palatable, nutritious and health
ful. If American housewives but knew the
superiority of CoUolene over lard, both from
a practical and health standpoint, lard would
never again enter any
well-regulated kitchen.
