A Valley of Death In Ilolivln.
There Is a valley In Bolivia, South
Amorlca, which might well bo called
tho Valley of the Shadow of Death.
It has been inhabited for an Indefi
nite period of years by tho Kanaa
Indians, who aro kindred to tho
varloua South American tribes and
number now only a few hundred
noiila. That thoy wero orice a very
powerful tribe Is Indicated- by the
condition of tho land which they m
a trlbo still Inhabit. Ono cannot
travel any distance through their
land without coming jpon tho old
and forsaken burial grounds of the
Kanaa dead. Theso places cannot be
called graveyards, for tho bodies are
not burlod, but rather placed upon
elevated platforms, wrapped In tho
garments of death and bound to tho
crossbeams that thoy may not bo
displaced.
In ono of theso burial grounds
thero will bo probably GO high skele
ton platforms and on each' will Ho
from three to fivo of tho Kanaa dead.
Tho nlr In that part of Bolivia Is
very puro and preservative, for it !
ono of tho highest plateaus' of tho
continent, although Kanaa valloy Is
Just a Ilttlo below tho plateau's
height. A truvolor passing through
thnt land at night and by moonlight
would bo awo-strlcken at the gloomy
vision those grnveyards present.
