ter a chase across the two conti
nents, representatives of one of the
biggest Insurance companies In Eng
land have caused the apprehonslon
of William Watson, an engineer, who
has been llvlntr hero under an as
sumed name, and who was supposed
to have boon drowned off -the British
coast in 1900.
Watson Bigned a statement ad
mitting that, with tho intention of
defrauding the Insurance company,
he had thrown a wilt of his clothes
on the beach at North Sunderland,
England, and had then taken a train
for tho South. From London he hur
ried to Paris, Inter he wont to Cana
da. From Queboc Watson entered
tho United States. He came to the
Pacific coast, visiting Seattle, Port
land, San Francisco, and at length
reached Los Angeles, and has boon
here several months. Domestic
troubles, love for another woman, a
system of frenzied flnnnco and sevcr
al other causes led Watson to loavo
his home.
Watson was manager of a poultry

debt and finally decldod to leavo his
fnmllv and start anow. Ho borrowoJ
money from a widow, to whom ho
presented as security, nn Insurnnco
policy on his life for $5000, nnmlng
tho widow as bonoflcinry. Ho also

of his wife. Weston says ho then
nlnreri a suit of his clothlnc on tho
bench, giving tho Impression of buI-
clde, and then disappeared. Both
tho wife and tho widow, from whom
Watson borrowod tho monoy, collect
ed tho Insurance on his lifo.
Less thnn a year ago tho widow
died. An Investigation of her of-
fecta dlscloeod a lettor wrltton from
Queboc, In which ho montloned Cali
fornia as his fiituro homo. Ho ex
plained that sho must bo very secret
about tho transaction. Tho repre
sentatives of tho dofrauded insurnnco

day night, January 23, 1908, Dr.
II. B. Johnson, nged 79 years, of
apoplexy.
Dr. Johnson was a prominent nhr.
Bicinn of Pendleton, and, up to three
yoars ago, when ho was afflicted with
a stroke of apoplexy, enjoyed fairly
good honlth. After his sickness, and
he bocamo violent, It was necessary
to bring him to tho asylum. Mm.
Johnson, who hnB bono a dovotcd
wlfo for ovor half a century, Is In tho
city, nnd will take the body to Pen-dloton.
