PITIFUL STORY 9
OF AGED INDIANS
Word was received by Dr. MIngus
last night that two old Indians had
beon found dead in their cnbln at
tho month of Lnrscn's Inlet, and ho
visited tho sceno this morning to as
certain what was tho mattor. Tho
Indians proved to bo "Old Lyman,"
and hla wlfo "Suslo Ann," names
given to them by whlto pcoplo years
ago becauso their own names were
hard to pronounce. Tho sccno at
tho cabin was pitiable In tho oxtromo
08 both tho old pcoplo woro nearly
100 yeara old and had nobody to nt
tond to them.
A rancher passing tlw plnco n
week ngo today saw signs of life
about tho pilaco, but slnco that time
thoro had been so sign of movement.
Dr. MIngus Is of 'tho opinion that
tho old cor.iplo died last Mondaj, tho
wlfo becauso of exposuro and tho old
Indian bocauso of grlof over tho pass
ing of his long llfo partner.
Tho body of tho woman was found
half way botween tho cabin and tho
water In a nudo condition, and it
was ovldent that sho had been bath
ing, as was her habit, In tho waters
or tho Inlet. Tho exposuro was evi
dently too great for her and she
dropped dond on her way back to
tho cnbln. Tho old husbnnd, al
though orlppled with paralysis, find
ing that his partner, who was qfulto
blind, did not return, must have
made his way to the rorhalns after
match effort.
Ho covered her body with his

no sign of violence In olthor case.
That they had not sturvol was oas
lly ovldont from the fact that thoro
was plenty of food on tho promises,
nlBO contldorablo dlothlng, most of
which had been furnished by tho
county. Up to n short tlmo ago tho
condition of tho Indians wns pitiable,
becauso they wero without) food and
woro unable to help themselves. Mrs.
Henry Songstackon Interested her
self on bohalf of tho Indians by ask
ing tho county to look after them
Sho had mado thorn up a bundle of
clothing and food and was to havo
taken tho articles to tho Indians In
a few days, as eho had become Inter
estod In their welfare. From tho
condition of tho cabin, howover, It
has developed that they woro not lu
need of anything oxcopt dally atten
tion.
Very llttlo Is known of tho old
couple as they havo kept to them
selves for many yoara. It Is claimed,
howover, that thoy wore tho oldOBt
Indians of tho Kusan tribe in Coos
county, and that thoy were full
grown boforo this section had over
been visited by whitomen. It was
possible becauso of this fact that
thoy found it hard to become nsio-
ciated In any way with a race which
has doprlved them of their country.
Tho Indians do not keep trnok of
their ago, and while tho docooBed
In dlans may have beon much mora
than a hundrod yoara old, Judging
from their annoaranco, llttlo Is
known about thorn, tholr age Is
ploced oloso to the contury mark.
Tho romalna wlM bo laid to rost by
tho county authorities, and Dr. MIn
gus does nob think It necessary to
hold an inquest ovor the remains,
