And, it Is folly, to fool with the o'd
trees, when it is so much easier and
bo much moro of a money mnkor to
transform ithem Into new trees, con
verting tho old orchard into a younr
one.
Mr. Lownrdalo outlined his plun
In Ills nddro-s. It Is the plan that
tho Willamette valloy fmit naocin
tion Ib going to puah nil over western
Orogon. It Is a plan thnt has the
Indorsement of tho stato bonrd of
horticulture, of which Mr. Newell is
prosidont. It has tho Indorsement of
the fruit Inspectors. It la a sensible
plnn, for it provos tha quickest and
ooslost way to got rid of tho old or
chards. C1m)i Down Old Trees.
This In tho plan. Tho old trootf
cut down cImc to tho ground. Only
tho roots should bo prosorvod Intact.
That should bo dona by the first of
March this year. By tho following
springtime, thero will bo now sprouts
on nil tho roots. Between Mny 10th
and March lfitli, on threo of four of
the best of thoso sprouts tho desired
vnrloty is to bo grafted. In threo or
four yoors thereafter, tho treo will
bo in good boaring, and Mr. Lowns-
dnlo saya, yielding, a yearly revenue
of ?5 to ?10 per tree. If it is do
slrod, itho trunk of tho old treo may
bo bo out that two or threo feet will
be loft landing. Ton inches below
tho grafts may bo put In tho first
year, and n yoar's timo bo gained in
gotting a crop. In this sort of graft
ing, however, oxport work Is required
in- order to bo successful, and tho
plan is not.thoreforo, consldored as
desirable of grafting to tho sprouts,
whoro less skill Is required. Tho ro
suit Mr. Lowndalo Bays, would bo to
mnko or tho' old orchard, the best
paying pleco of Innd on any farm.
With tho best varieties of fruit thus
produced, and in quantities so great
as would b? consequent from general
application of the plan, thero would
Instant1' appear a profitable market,
with an easy sale of the fruit and at
high prices.
Announcements Later.
It Is probable that a groat doal
moro will bo heard of the plan with
in coming weoks. A body of astute
and earnest fruit men has boon de
liberating at tho college all this week.
Among them arc Proeldont Newell of
the state board of horticulture, Mr.
Reed of tho samo organization, a long
list of fruit inspectors from tho var
ious counties, and horticulturists
from various parts of the state. It
is probablo that as a result of their
aoiiuoratioUB, they win within a
short time iafiue an address to thu
public on tho subjoot of tho old orchards.
The Lesson of the Eagle
and the Weasel
The familiar story goes that once, when an eagle
pounced upon a weasel and soared with it high into the
air, the weasel fastened its fangs deep into the eagle's breast
and commenced to draw its life-blood. The eagle tried to
shake the weasel off, but the weasel hung on until the
eagle fell lifeless to the ground.
There is a moral in this for every sufferer from coughs
or colds. Don't let your cough hang on for
every day it weakens your lungs and gradually wears
down your system until serious lung troubles develop.
DR. D. JAYNE'S
