I Tho Reforest lug of Ireland.
1 T. M. Webber, Forest Surveyor of
Northwest India, who wnn recently
consulted by tho Irish Forestry
Commlttco concerning the planting
of treoH In thnt Island, advised that
the rocky hills bo planted with
spruce , tho lovlnndB with noli, larch
and sycamore, with poplar for pulp
wood whoro conditions nro favor
able flv kinds of troos In nil.
This short list Is In marked con
trast with that of a Danish forester
a generation ago, who recommonded
thirty-six cone-bearing trees and fifty-four
brond loaved treos for plant
ing lu Ireland. Tho tondcucy of
modorn forestry Is to select a fow of
tho very hot spooled, develop thorn
to tho utmost .(ind not waste tlmo In
giving apneo 'to others.
Fow Inhabltod countries, whoro
conditions aro favorablo, are moro
dontltuto ot timber thnn Ireland.
Only 1 ,4 per cent of Its area Is wood
od, and Mr. Wobbor points out that
even the socalled woodod tracts
contain only throe or four troos to
tho acre Instond of 200, which tho
bud Is cupnblo of growing. One-
I fifth of tho land I waste land.
Ireland was not always so noorly
trtuiloas. It onco contained splendid
forests, but they woro wasted In tho
Mbiuo way that tho forests of so many
othor count ilea have boon wasted.
The reign of Quoon Ellzhhoth saw
tho last or Ireland's URtrvo .forest.
Splondld trunks burled in tho bogs
ht-ur witness to tho size or the trees
once g -.owing thoro.
There I scarcely an acre in Iro
land oxeopt rocky lodges, or situa
tions whoro troilon has destroyed
the soil. tlnU will not groy .trees If
given a ohanoe. Tho British Isle
annually import lumber to the
value of nearly $76,000,000. Ire
laudcould grow onough timber to
wupply a large part of this without
using any of tho land now dovotod to
ngrlculturo, by planting forests in
waste places.
The Irish Forestry Society has
been working several years to In
duce landowners to plunt troea, not
for ornnmont or game shelter, but
i for the profit. Business men inter
Jested in Ireland Bee opportunities
there, nnd Its forestry movement no'v
