DISINTERESTED ADVICE TO PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT.
Tho Capital Journal is only a small nowspapor and its advice is not a
drop in tho bucket in a presidential contest.
But auch as It Is, and small as It may be, It Is freely given and
COSTS THE RECIPIENT NOTHING.
The editor of this paper is above pocturlng in such a hypocritical
manner as that he Is never Influenced .In what he says.
But he Is not needing any federal appointment in order to live, and
could not get one If ho did need It, HB CAN AFFORD TO.TKLL THE
TRUTH ONCE IN A WHILE.
So ho would say to Teddy: Don't. Be wiser than somo of your
would-be advisers.
Thcodoro, you know very well, Jf you wanted to you could stampede
that national Republican convention TO GIVE YO UANOTIIER TERM
AS PRESIDENT.
When political parlies aro ovonly divided it take? but a small por
centngo of votors to change tho romlt.
Thoro aro enough peoplo In tho United States who believe EIGHT
TEARS OK ANY ONE MAN AS PRESIDENT IS LONG ENOUGH.
You havo nil tho honors that can come to a president, peacemaker,
-noldler, politician, nuthor, orator, statesman.
You havo squeezed thnt presidential lemon dry. THERE IS NOTII
INO MORE IN IT FOR YOU HUT TROUBLE.
Take an older man's ndvlco, and for onco In tho history of thnt exalted
office, refuse tho proffered crown nnd bo tho big man.
Thero will bo plenty of dignified work for you to do. THE COUN
TJIV HAS GOT TO HAVE THAT CANAL BUILT ON TIME.
Thoro will ho a big ruction with Japan ono of those days for the su
premacy of tho Pacific nnd you will bo noodod In command.
Wo may havo to havo United States ownership of tho railroads and
your hnnd WOULD HE VALUABLE ON THE THROTTLE.
Take a hunch Teddy and put tho capshoaf on your popularity by
turning down something probably no othor in nn would bo big enough
to leave.

TO H.YPHIMTE .U'STICU.
Tho Alabama State liar nssoeln Ion has invited the other state bar
mmoolut Ions of tho country to consider amending criminal procedure by
doing away with new trlulit on more Uohnlcnlltto.
Its communication to the othor n Herniations points out that In Now
England thero nro Vi times u many homicides in proportion to popula

times as iiitiuy.
The caiiHo of this difference tho Alabama association thinks s that
justice Is swift In England, while hero It is glow and frequently mis
earrhiH. To support their purpose to Improve criminal trials wo do not havo to
ngroo with tho Alabama lawyers that this contrast hotweoii tho effect
Ivoiiohh of trial In England and here is enough to account for tho rarity
of bloodshed there and Its frequonoj bore.
To be perfectly logical and tyistalu the Alabama lawyers contention
it would be necessary to show that Justice was swifter and less fre
quently miscarried In New England than In California, nnd In Ciillfoi"
ilia In Ud turn than In Nevada.
Thou iiewitoiH of civilization In must parts of this country largo!) ac
count for tho fiequency of homlclri here.
llut doubt loss the frequent failure of Juatloo has IU lutUiunot In stim

Therefore, even though the suggestion be somewhat rndlcel. good
