A FRIEND ON THE WAY.
GOOD
Who cares for the burden, tho night and the rain,
And tho stoop, long loncsomo road,
When nt last throught tho darkness a light shines plain,
Whon a voice calls hall, and a friend draws rein
With an arm for tho stubborn load?
Though his way lto ovor tho prairies green,
And tnino up tho sunrise hill;
Though no moro in my path may his light bo spon,
And I nevor may travel tho leagues botweon,
Ills succor aidB mo still.
For llfo Is tho chanco of n friend or two
This sido of tho Journoy's goal;
Though tho world bo a dosort tho long night through,
Yot tho floworg bloom and tho sky grows blue
Whon a soul salutes a soul.

THE DEAR LITTLE DROWN MEN.
It is announced that whon tho vlnoyardlsts of San Joaquin county got
toady to omploy grapc-plckors thoy found tho Httlo brown men all
Vcady for them and woro cotnpolled to pay $2. 50 or let their grapes

HELP TO HE HAD. AND THE GRAPE GROWERS TOOK THEIR
MEDICINE. IP THE WEATHER IS PAVOHAHLE THE GROWERS
THIS YEAR WILL I'HOHAHLE RAVE A LITTLE MONEY LEFT
AFTER PAYING THEIR HELP.
If rain comes and extra trimming Is required thoy will loso money.
Either way Is porfoctly satisfactory to tho Japs.
It will bo $2. CO a day Just tho samo.
Wo rojiout tho warning which wo bavo frequently given, that if .Tnpa

Tho .TnpH tako It nit.
WHEN A VIN'EYAHDIST DISCOVERS THAT LIFE AT THE MERCY
OF THE JAPS IS NOT WORTH LIVING HE LEASES HIS VINEYARD
TO ONE OP THEM AND THAT IS THE IIEGINNING OF THE END OF
THAT DISTRICT AS A WHITE MAN'S COUNTRY.
In hiicIi cuhoh as that In San Jonquln county It is not tho fact that,
grnpo-groworB intiHt pay $2. 50 por day Mint Is alarming, but tho discov

If tho price had boon net nt $3.5 0 Inatond of $2.50 It would linvo

Help nan bo got by our orohardlsts by propor effort of a kind which
will ultimately mnko good American citizens.
It oiinnt bo ilouu by organization In single districts, nor possibly, by
Individual effort nt all. It Hhnuld bo done by placing a stato ofllclal nt

And If n special hohhIoii of tho legislature Is cnlled next winter that
should be one of tho objects spoolllcd In tho call.
Hut tlioro aro tlilugH which fruit-growers also must do,
They must ilevhio plaitH for giving employment to a ronsonnblo num

Concerted effort lo bring to the stn'o him always brokon down hocause
avIioii It (Mi mo to tho sonitoh hardly a grower could bo found who would
contract to lake any definite number of man nt any dollnlto tlmo or keep

It would depend, thoy would my. on tho lxo of tho crop nud the tlmo
of ripening.
Tlioro will nlwiiys be wuni llontlug workman to bo got on short un

INVESTMENT ARE DIRECTED IIY INTEREST RATES HIGHER THAN
REAL ESTATE HAS REBN ACCUSTOMED TO PAY.
It Is evident that borrowers on mortgages will ha'vo to pay higher
rates than those to which they have been accustomed or go without the
money.
Savings banks in this city are making renewals and small loans, and
to some oxtont accommodating old customers with new loans at 7 and
7V6 per cent.
They aro not making large loans or leandlng at all to thoBo who have
not done business with them before.
They have not tho money because thoy have to keep their reserves
much higher than is usual, for tho high lntorest rates obtalnablo Is in
ducing somo depositors to withdraw for other Investments.
This necessity of keeping moro ready money than usual on hand of
course diminishes tho ability to loan.
That condition, however, Is thought to bo temporary.
Tho high rates now obtainable on mortgages In this city aro qulta
sufficient to attract capital for that purpose.
It has boon hold back on account of what was thought to bo an ab
normally high moral risk.
Tho rcscuo of tho city government from the boodlers Is beginning to
have its effect and confidence is felt that if tho coming election put"?
municipal affairs permanently In tho hands of men of character and
standing there will bo no troublo about mortgago loans thereafter, al
though at rates higher than have hlthorto been paid.
