GOOD
TRE MAN LAND."
Llttlo boy, little boy, would you go so soon
To tho land where the grown mnn lives?
Would you barter your toys and your airy things
For tho things that tho grown man gives? '
Would you leave the haven whoso doors are set
With tho Jowols of Lovo's alloy
For tlw land of emptiness and regret?
Would you go, llttlo boy, llttlo boy?
It's a land far off, llttlo boy, llttlo boy,
And tho way It Is dark and Bteep;
And onco you have passed through Its doors, llttlo boy,
You mayn't oven comn back to sleop.
Thero Is no tucking In, no good night kiss,
No mornings of childhood joy.
It's passion and pain you glvo for this,
Think well, llttlo boy, llttlo boy!
Llttlo boy, llttlo boy, can't you soo tho ghosts
That llvo In tho land off there;
Tho "brokon hearts," "fair hopes," all dead;
"LoBt faith" and "grim despair?"
Thoro's a train for that land in tho aftor years
When old Tlmo rushos in to destroy
Tho wall that stands 'tween tho Joy and tho tears
So don't go, llttlo boy, llttlo boy!

NEW DEAL AT THE AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE.
Tho Orogonlnn has a ringing editorial standing by tho new deal at
tho stato agricultural collcgo.
It upholds manfully tho now president of that institution, against UN
CALLED FOR ATTACKS ON THE STATE AGRICULTURAL COL
LEGE. It Is an open secret that tho grangos of Orogon felt Buro thero was to
bo n now ileal at that Institution, nnd rofralncd. from, criticising the
largo appropriations mado for tho Corvallls Institution.
Tho mnchlno politicians of Orogon woro baflled at every point In their
nttompt TO LAND ONE OK THEIR NUMIIER IN THE PRESIDENCY OF
THE FARMER'S COLLEGE.
Now tho organs of tho machlno, which dominated tho last loglslnturc,

Orogonlnn Is as follews:
(Tho Orogonlnn Editorial of May 12.)
Home half dozen Oregon nowHpapors havo taken up tho cry against
President Kerr, of tho agricultural college.
Tho express misgivings us to tho wlmlom of his election BECAUSE HE
WAS ONCE A MORMON AND A POLYGAMIST.
Do thcHo papors know what they nro doing?
Do they uudorstaud they nro aiding tho Mormon hierarchy to wren'.:
ItH revenge upon Mr. Korr for renouncing polygamy many years ago In
Ills young manhood and lighting the Mormon political mnchlno over
ulnco?
Tho hierarchy has driven him out of tho Utah Agricultural College;
IT HAS DETERMINED TO DRIVE IIIM OUT OF THE OREGON COL
LEGE. Those newspapers aro helping on the wicked purpose
The hierarchy lias rosolvod that no man who lights It shall over enjoy
u position of honor wost of tho Hoyy mountains.
Mr. Kurr lias fought It for many yours,
Some of tho uowHpnporu of Orogon nro Joining In tho conspiracy to
punish him.
Is this Hlmplo luunceuco, or Ib It something worse?
Tho touo of tho Eugene newspapers Is uspuolally malignant.
WHAT CAN RE THE MOTIVE HEIIIND THE INEXDOES which
have appeared In tho Guard and Register?
Tho Guard speaks of Mr. Korr us "ono of thorn," moaning "ono of
tho Mormon loaders."
It must know that tills Is untruo nnd that tho Mormon londors aro hla
bitter uuumluK.
It says, with cruel liijutttlco, that Orogon is "not roady to nccopt ovou
negatively tho tonott of tho Mormon faith."
Mr. Korr dot not hold those tenets AND IS THE LAST MAN IN THE
WORLD TO TEACH THEM, ultlior positively or uogntlvoly.
Tho Guard says "hla Holuotlon was a grnvo error of Judgmont on tit
part of tho board of regents."
It was rwilly tho souudost Judgmont, for Mr. Korr is roputod to he
A .MAN OF HIGH ATTAINMENTS, GREAT EXECUTIVE AIIILITY AND
SINGULAR FITNESS FOR THE POSITION IN EVERY WAY.
Tho KiiKtuio HoKlstor speaks of Mr. Koor us "tho now Mormon presi

It luidH that, "he would no doubt bo n polygnmlst hut for tho law
against It." and HUggouta that "ho will bo uuito a stimulus to Mormonlam
In wiwtorn Orogon."
What could bo moanor than thoic remarks?
MR. KNItlt IS A IIKTTER CHRISTIAN THAN THOSE WHO MA
LION IIIM, and, Instoad of stimulating Mormonlsm, so far ns It moans
tho Mormon machine, or polygamy he will light it horo ns ho has in
Utah.
Do tho Eugene papors think thoy will help tho causo of tho state
unlvuralty by audi methods?
THE UNIVERSITY MUST DEPEND FOR ITS SALVATION UPON
THE FAVOR OF CANDID, FAIR-MINDED, INTELLIGENT PEOPLE.
Such people nro not won by Blander.
Inuoudn does not attract thorn.
Thoy aro not likely to Join In n conspiracy to ruin one of tho prlnclpn'
onomlort of MormonUin hoeauso ho U an onomy of MormonUm.
THEV ARE LIKELY TO CONCLUDE THAT AN INSTITUTION
WHICH MUST DEPEND UPON MALIGNANT SLANDER FOR ITS I)E
FENSE IS PAST DEFENDING.
Wo guosa that the appropriation for tho university will not gain ninny
frlondu by tho attack which tho Htmone iwpors aro making upon tho agri
cultural college through Its omlnout president.
That is, tho average efficacy, for It was not denied THAT HUMAN
LIFE IS SAFE IN THE HANDS OF SOME OF THEL
A meeting of the American Medical association was held in Chicago
the other day and thero seemed to bo a general agreement that ono of tho
speakers did not go too far when be said that, while 4000 physicians
aro graduated in this country every year, THREE-FOURTHS WERE
UNFIT TO PRACTICE MEDICINE.
This unfitness nroso partly from a lack of preparatory education bo
foro going to medical colleges and partly from a low standard in tho
medical colleges themselves.
Ono of the Bpenkers said ho had been lecturing In a medical college for
years over the heads of students WHO KNEW TOO littijH of uiiem
ISTRY, HACTERIOLOGY AND PHYSIOLOGY TO FOLLOW HIM INTEL-
LIOENTLY.
Another speaker dwelt on tho laxity of tho examinations conducted by
stato boards to ascertain whether the applicant is fit to practice modlcine.
Ho said 58 per cent of tho persons that failed on the first examination
succeeded nt tho Bccond, and to hlB mind this was evidence that tno appli
cants had studied along tho lines of the questions met in tho first exam
ination. Tho consensus of opinion was that tho standard of medical educatiou
should bo raised and that students should not bo admitted to medical
colleges until thoy have more knowledgo about things In general AND
PARTICULARLY ABOUT THE SCIENCES RELATED TO MEDICINE.
Any ono that ha3 visited a medical college may recall tho youthful
faces.
Moro boys are often found in tho lecture rooms.
They aro ngolng Just ns fast as they can, qf course by starting tho shy
Bldoburns or tho backward board or by cultivating tho ImprosBlvo man
nor preparatory to tho hanging of the shingle, but withal thoy cannot hide
their youth and inexperience.
It 1b no offense to bo young, RUT TO RE YOUNG AND INEXPERI
ENCED AND AT THE SAME TIME DEFICIENT IN EDUCATION
a condition deplored at tho meeting of tho American Medical assocla
tion this Is a danger to life, for tho protection of which tho profession
of modlclno Is Btipposed to exlBt.
In calling attention to tho defects of tho present system of training
physicians, THE ASSOCIATION PERHAPS DID NOT COMPARE THE
PRESENT WITH THE PAST.
Unquestionably tho standards aro higher now than thoy were a do
cado or two ago when examinations woro required by few states and
whon It was a far easier matter lo becomo a "doctor" than It is to-
Thoro Is ono thing certain: Tho Amerlcnn Medical association wl'l
find tho general public In sympathy with any movement to rnlso the
atandnrd of medical oducatlon still higher.

Tho ondorsomout and olllolnl record of President Korr show two things
ho has ben against tho political mnohluo nnd tho log-rolling liter
urchy everywhoro.
Ho liaa a record or praotloal work as na agriculturist THAT FITS
HIM FOR THE PLACE TO WHICH HE IS ELECTED.
He in born and ralsod a farmer and educator combined and said to
liAVe grant oxooutlvo ability,
He can go out among tho farmors and talk farming, nnd llvo stock
nnd oropa, and loavo tho impression THAT HE IS NOT PUTTING IT ALL
ON FOR THE OCCASION.

Tho Drown Lumber company's

will loso the revenue for carrying
that quantity of lumber to market,
averaging from $5.13 to $8 per thou

company, rich thought It 13, continue
