Ski Jumping Now n Circus Thriller.
New York, March 21. Ski Jump
ing will bo ono of tho features of
tho circus program. In tho French
"flecho rumalno" act introduced into
tho United States by Barnum & Bail
ey several years ago, a man rodo a
bicycle down a steep incline, gather
ed sufficient momentum to sail forty
fcot through tho air, and after land
ing on a seroud incline, sped safely
to tho ground. In this season's
thriller, iustead of riding a wheel,
tho performer makes his flight
mounted on an S-foot ski. This is an
adaption of tho Scandinavian winter
sport of ski Jumping. Norway and
Sweden hnvo many clubs of inon of
almost reckless daring who hnvo won
laurols in this pastime. Tho nnnual
meet of tho Ski club on Mount Halme-
kellcn, ten miles from Christiana,
Norway, attracts visitors from all
parts of Europe and has many fea
tures that Interest lovers of sport tho
world. Over starting from tho high
est point of tho mountain, tho con
testants, mounted on skis, slldo over
tho snow crust down tho stoop de
clivities, dashing headlong nt tho
chasms, and when injury or death
BoeniB Immcnent, rising in tho air
and sailing over tho abyss. Somo of
theso crovessos aro from 20 to 100
feet in width, and can so many a
tragedy. It is this sport that will
bo Illustrated in its sensationalism
during tho Barnum & Bnilcy engage
ments, Tho mountain sido will bo

Tho chasm is simulated by a gnplng
opening botween tho runaway and a
landing cushion. Cnlt. Carl Howol
Bontho poformor who hold 70 cham

Jumping, will tnku his position on n
small platform at tho uppor ond of
tho runway, GO feet In tho air. At
tho signal ho darts down tho decliv
ity, strlkos an upward curve, goos
sailing through tho nir and lands
fairly upon his skis from 40 to CO
foot away. It is Bnid that no circus
thriller of recent yonrs has been so
offcctlvo in stirring an nudlouce.

HORSES IX DEMAND.
Buyers in the Pendleton Country
Cannot Bo Supplied.
Within tho past two months Pen
dleton has beon visited by a large
number of horso buyers, many of
them from distant states, all iu
search of heavy team horses, for
which they havo boon willing to pay
anywhoro from $200 to $500 per
span, for sound, heavy horses, says
tho Pendleton East Orogonlnn.
Very tow horses hnvo been bought
by outsldo buyers, tho local demand
in tho wheat belt making an excellent
market at home.
That moro good horses must bo
raised by Umatilla county peoplo
Is shown by this brisk demand for
good stock. The snmo domnnd is
found all ovor tho country and the
market cannot bo supplied.
Somo statistician bns been gather
ing the flguros nnd says that during
tho pnst sovon years the number of
horses in the United States has in'
creased from 15,000,000 to 23,000,-
000 an ndvanco In number of about
30 per cent.
Tho samo nuthorlty goes on to sny
that tho average prtco of a horso on
tho farm in 1000 was $14.50, but
that In 1907 It Is $94.50, tho high
est price, by tho way, of which thoro
Is any official record.
Thus it appears that whilo tho
number of horses in tho country has
Increased 30 per cent, their value
has Increased 112 per cent.
Electricity has relloved tho horso
of somo of its drudgery. Tho nuto
mobtlo has relieved tho rondstor of
somo of Its hnrdest nnd swiftest Jour
neys, but either of both havo fallen
far short of putting tho horso out
of businoss.
Not only aro thoro moro horses
than ovor beforo, but they bring hot
ter prlcos. Tills seems at first glance
nn nnomnlous situation. Tho oxpln
untlon must bo found In tho increas
ed population and tho groater do
mnnd for motivo nnd moving power
of nil sorts,
