Will Increase For Capita Tax
From Six Dollars to
Eight
Among tho changes which will be
proposed to tho state school laws at
tho coming session of the legislature,
for which bills havo been prepared in
tho ofllco of Stato Superintendent
Ackcrmnn, Is one proposed to amend
section 3374 of tho code providing
for an incrcaso of tho annual per
capita levy upon all children between
tho ages of four and twenty years In
each district from fi to $8,
This soctlon, as It now appears up
on tho slntutes, calles for a per capita
lovy of $8 but tho legislature, In
passing upon tho bill, cut tho amount
down to $G but tho chango was over
looked In tho drafting of tho code.
It 1b now proposed to Insert the origi
nal amount asked for as tho benefits
derived from tho lovy to tho stato
school Bystem havo on only boon lim
ited by tho amount of rovonuo raised
from this source
Another bill provides that section
3372, requiring that 85 per cont ot
tlo amount from tho five-mill school
tax and tho irrcduclblo school fund be
appllcablo to tcachors' salaries oxclu

amonded that tho balanco of this fund
unoxponded at tho closo of tho school
year rovort to tho general county
school fund and tho samo charged to
tho district as a part of tho succeed
ing year's apportionment thoronftor
As tho law now stnnds thcro is no
flvo-mlll lovy mndo by tho county
courts, which was abolished in Hon of
tho $6 per capita tax, but this provi
sion contemplates taking tho place or
tho presont systom of crediting $50
of tho $G0 apportionment to tho
school fund and restoring tho bal
anco to tho school fund and will havo
a tendency to oncourngo tho oxpcdl
turo of tho ontlro amount of rovonuo
raised.
It Is also proposed to amend sec
tion 3449 of tho coJo to provldo for
n mooting ot tho stato board of text
book commissioners on tlio. second

samo day ovory six years thereafter,
and provldos that no session shall be
