Bernard Oscar Velguth, the young
tailor-made automobile sport, whose
peculations caused consternation in
the Portland Gas Company's office,
and whose subsequent marriage to
the fair San Francisco divorcee, Na
dine Nlcholl, added somewhat to the
gaiety of nations, has donned prison
stripes at the state penitentiary. He
arrived at the James boarding house
last evening chaperoned by Sheriff
Bob Stevens, of Multnomah county,
and will spend some time at the In
stitution, depending on circum
stances. The last acts in the Velguth scan
dal were as metorlc and melodra
matic as the former ones. Yester
day afternoon Velguth appeared In
the circuit court at Portland and
pleaded guilty to the charge of em
bezzlement, and was given an Inde
terminate term In the penitentiary
of from one to ten years. Under tho
law. If his conduct has been good, he
may be pardoned or paroled at the
end of a year; otherwise he may be
kept In prison for ten years. He was
accompanied to the prison by his
brother, Arthur Velguth.
Velguth was a clerk for the Port
land Gas Company, and on a salary
of $80 per month, lived tho pace that
kills, and is said to have stolen $20,
000 from the company. He is be
lieved to have squandered a large
portion of this sum on his enchant
ress, Mrs. Nadine Nicholls, whom ho
married directly after his nrrest.
Hop Grower's Opinion.
Ed. C. Horren, the well-known hop
grower and merchant, of Aurora, re
turned home this morning, after a
brief visit In the city. He reports tho
hop market very qulot, and, In his
opinion, It Is likely to remain so for
awhllo longer at least. The fact that
something like CO, 000 bales of hops
have been contracted here In Oregon,
and that It will tnko about four
months for that amount to be used
by the bre"wers, lends him to believe
that the market will b"o dull for a
time. "At Aurora tho hops this
year," said he, "were of fine quality
and tho crop In the entire neighbor
hood was freo from mould. Tho
picking season' was all over by the
ICth."
As to the prosperity of the little
town of Aurora, he reports consider

Verdict for Plaint liT.
The case of Sclilickeiser against
Fred Dose, an appeal from tho Jus
tice court of Hubbard, occupied most
of tho time yesterday In Judge Bur
nett's court. It appeared that last
April Fred Dose, of Woodburn, con
tracted, at Wllsonville, for something
like 200 sacks of potatoes, valued at
$211, from C. L. Sclilickeiser and A.
Peters. Tho defense contended that
the contract was not In writing, as
to Mr. Peters' part, and that the con
tract was only for 100 sacks with
the plaintiff, and that there was no
delivery of the same because of
warehouse charges. The jury, after
being out a little while, brought in
a verdict for the plaintiff for the
amount sued for, $211.90.
H. Overton represented Fred Dose
and DImIck & Dlmlck, of Oregon
.City, and S. T. Richardson appeared
for the plaintiff.
