A Big Timber Deal.
I Five thousand two hundred acres
Df splendid timber land, embracing
ill of the holdings of the Charles A.
Street Lumber Company, an Eastern
jrporatlon, in Linn and Marion
juntles, was sold Wednesday to the
Jurtiss Lumber Company for $105,-
J00. Part of the tract was in the
zone of the big forest fires near De
troit, and the fire is probably respon
sible to some extent for the trnnsfer,
as the burned timber will have to
be logged off In the next two seasons
in order to save it.
The land lies along bothbanks of
'the North Santlam river, below De
troit, and along the Breltenbush riv
er and French creek. It is all near
the Corvallls & Eastern railroad,
hence the timber Is directly tribu
tary to the Gurtls Company's mills
at Mill City. The tract Includes
somo of the finest timber in the
state. It is to be paid in three annu
al installments of ?35,'l00.

forwards from Yokohama the follow
ing frank Interview with a Japanese
cotton manufacturer, as published in
the Japanese Chrenicle:
President Yamanobe of the Osaka
Cotton Spinning Company has Just
returned from a business tour In
Manchuria and' Corea. He says the
prospects of the Japanese cotton
goods market are very promising
The goods shipped for Manchuria
during May by the Sanyei Kumial, a
syndicate for the export of cotton
goods, amounted to 1000 bales. The
syndicate is prepared to -ship 1500
bales this month (June), 2000 bales
next month, 2500 bales in August
and 3000 bales in September.
"In our eyes," says Mr. Yamanobe,
"the purchasing power of the Man
curians is almost boundless. The In
habitants of Manchuria nre much
better off than the Coreans, and, In
addition to this advantage, about
20,000 persons are yearly flowing;
into the country from Shantung and
thereabout. The new settlers add !
to the demand, and It Is difficult to
imagine how great will grow the
consumption of cottom goods in
Manchuria. Japanese sheetings,

tldugm It k eattMiy ot of the ques-
tlon to drive away American goods
from the Manchurlan market; but
It Is generally admitted by sensible
men, Japanese and foreigners alike,
that Japanese cotton .textiles will
conquer the Manchurlan market in
the end. There are already signs of
this.
The market for American goods
Is extremely unfavorable, and sup
plies are as rapidly getting congested
as Japanese goods are being cleared.
During our stay in Manchuria n
commission of foreign merchants In
Shanghai arrived, and the commis
sion seems to have been convinced
that Japanese shirtings are a power
ful rival to-foreign cotton. The price
of Japanese shirting Is about $2.25
per piece of forty yards, against the
American, which Is valued at from
$3.25. to $3,75, while the quality of
the two is almost alike. Under these
circumstances the success of our
goods In the contest with Anierlcan
goods is already beyond doubt. Japa
nese goods enjoy a further advnn-
tage: They nro admitted duty free at
Talren (Dalny), while American
goods have to pay an .Import duty of
about $2 per bale at Newchwang.
This privilege of the Japanese will
be removed sooner or later as a Chl-

The Penalty of Sarcasm.
Senator Ingalls, during his early
life, was unable to restrain his pro
pensity to indulge In sarcasm. This
habit eventually lost him his placo

an Intimate friend wrote to him urg
ing the appointment of another
friend to a position under tho gov
ernment. To this letter tho senator
returned a very sarcastic answer,
nnd received the following reply:
"My Dear Senater: I think It would

your friends, of whom I am ono."
