Women Who Wear Well.
Is astonishing how great n change
years of mnrried life often make
he appearance and disposition of
,ny women. Aiiu iresuiieesa, mu

un from a flower which is rudely
idled. The matron is only a dim
idotv, a faint echo of the charming
iien. Few young women appreciate
shock of the system through the
inge which comes with marriage and
itherhood. Many neglect to deal with
unpleasant pelvic drains and weak-
ises which too often come with mar-
ige and motherhood not understand-
that this secret drain is robbing the
eek of its freshness and the form of
fairness.

lnnn.V condition of the female system
Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription can
do only Kood never harm, its whole
effect is to strengthen, invigorate and
regulate the whole female system and
especially the pelvic organs. When
these are deranged in function or affect
ed by disease, the stomach and other
organs of digestion become sympatheti
cally deranged, the nerves are weak
ened, and a long list of bad, unpleasant
symptoms follow. Too much must not
be expected of the " Favorite Prescrip
tion." It will not performtmiracles;
will not cure tumors no medicine will.
It tcill often prevent them, if taken in
time, and thus the operating table and
the surgeon's knife may be avoided.

HILL iS
AFTER
HARRI1HAN
Will Build From Butte to San-
Francisco Through Cent
ral Oregon
The second move In the great war
of two railroads has been made.
The Hill Interests have gathered
their forces and are contending with
might and main to wrest from Hnrri-
mau the control of the rich districts
of central Oregon. The purchaso of
the California Northeastern by the
Southern Pacific was the first movo
In the game, and was designed to
forestall the plain of the Hill inter-
ests, who had announced the inten
tion of building from Butte, Mont.,
to Boise, Idaho, down through cen
tral Oregon, and finally ending at
San Francisco. This road, which
would be a branch of the transconti
nental system of the Great Northern
and the Northern Pacific, would pro
vide a short cut for good to San
Francisco from the northwest, n,nd
would considerably eat Into tho prof
Its of the Harrlman system. Tho
Southern Pacific seeing that the new
move would give tho Hill interests
control of tho heart of Oregon, de
termined to check the plan before It
had been fairly started, and with
that end In view, bought tho Cali
fornia Northeastern, now building,
hoping to push It to completion nnd
secure control of the threatened ter
ritory before the Hill crowd was
fully awake
Contracts for Steel.
But word has reached the local
officials or the Southern Pacific that
the Hill Interests are not asleep.
They are very much on. tho alert,
and will put up a stiff battle before
they give up their cherished plan.
The officials of tho San Francisco,
Idaho nnd Montnna railroad have an
nounced largo contracts for bridge
work nnd structural steel, and say
that the whole route has been sur
veyed and cross-sectioned, nnd that
actual construction work will begin
In a few days. So far thu Southern
Pacific has an apparent handicap In
the war for the rich heart of Oregon,
but If the statement of the officials
of the Hill line Is true, that they are
ready to go ahead with the actual
construction of tho road, they are
not far behind the Hnrrlmah crowd
and the race bids fair to be an ex
citing one. The Southern Pacific has
made few surveys beyond Klamath,
and has really advanced but a short
distance along tho main route Into
the heart of Oregon, but seems to bo
waiting until tho proposed lino of
the California Northeastern to Klam
ath Falls Is completed before work
goes ahead on the main line.
Struggle of Great Roads.
Tho Hill people nre terribly In
earnest and announce that they have
unlimited capital stock back of them
in the struggle, nnd consider the
country contested for the most Im
portant in the United States still
undeveloped by railroads.
One of the now bridges ordered by
the road will be over GG4 feet long,
across tho Snake river. Tho now
road will give tho ores of the mines
of Idaho nnd probably Nevada a
shorter route to tho world's markets,
and will tap the rich coutry to bo
opened up by tho United States re
clamation service in which over $11,
OQO.OOO will bo Bpent.
The result of tho contest between
the two great roads will probably be,
according to the judgment of rail
road men, a tie, and both roads will
enter the now territory and sharo
the profits. Harrlman has hoped to
discourage Hill by the purchaso of
the California Northeastern, already
under construction, but tho move
only urged Hill to greater efforts,
and the race will now be exceedingly
close.
Just a' Little Sprinkle.
F. P. Cory, manager of the Mitch
ell Implement repository, on State
street, is one of tho business men of
this city who does things. At tho
timer of the first experiment in oiling
tho streeU of the city, ho becamo
deeply interested In the movement
and has watcbod ever since with
keen Interest. Sprinkling with water
in front of bis premises has not
proved successful, and last evening
he applied a coat of oil in front of
his placo of business.
Tho oil was purchased in Portland
at 85 centa per barrel, Mr. Cary ap
plied the oil by tho means of a hand
sprinkler. Aa the experiment was
made In a manner bat anyone can
carry out for himself. It will be
watched with considerable Interest.

l'u' utuuii ui uiipeuung irom mu
decision of the railroad commission
granting n joint rate on wheat, saya
a recent Pullman dispatch, and Is
getting no wheat at all at this point.
It Is stated on what appears to be
excellent nuthorlty that tho Ewarts
vllle grange, with a membership of
more than 300, Is disciplining tho
Oregon road for its action in refus
ing n joint rate on wheat, nnd that
tho grain of all the members of this
grange is being hauled past the
warehouses of the O. R. & N. to
those of tho Northern Pacific, and
tho grange members nre storing
their grain there. Tho warehouses
on the Northern Pacific aro filled to
overflowing, while those of tho O. R.
& N. aro almost empty. Whllo long
strings of two, lour and six horse
teams are standing in line wnltlng to
tinlond nt tho warehouses on the
Northern Pacific, and great piles of
sacked grain are being built up on
tho outsldo of the warehouses, which
nre filled to the roof, not a team was
scon about either of tho warehouses
on the O. R. & N.
While It Is not stated officially
that the grange took tho action men
tioned above, tho action of tho mem
bers of the grar.se, who aro hauling
their grain past the warehouses of
tho O. R. & N., where most of them
have stored their grain for years, to
those on tho Northern Pacific, gives
color to the statement. It Is snld
that tho piles of grain substantiate
the statement, that 95 per cent of
tho grahii marketed here this season
hns gone to the Northern Pacific.
That Portland grain buyers and
officials of the Oregon Railroad &.
Navigation company nre worried
over the situation Is proved by tho
frequent visits of these men to Pull
man and the earnest consultations
they have had with their agents
hero.
Last year the Northern Pacific got
the bulk of the grain at this point.
In former years the O. R. & N. had
always secured about 75 per cent of
tho grain marketed at Pullman.
Last year the sound mnrket was
from 14 to 5 cents nbovo that at
Portland, and the grenter part of tho
grain wont to tho Northern Pacific.
Much was said about this at the time
and strenuoiiB efforts were mndo to
hide the fact and to Induce tho
farmers to store their grain in' tho
warehouses on the O. R. & N., but
the conditions last years were not'
nearly so marked ns this season
Judging from the amounts of grain
seen nt tho warehouses on tho two
lines, the estimate of 95 per cent be
ing' stored nt tho Northern Pacific
warehouses seems conservative.
The same conditions nre said to
exist at Moscok, Garfield and Oukes
dale, which aro competitive points
and where the farmers can store on
either road, but it Is said tho con
trast is not so marked at any point
as at Pullman. While the samo prlco
Is quoted on both roads at competi
tive points it Is said that as a rulo
lower prices are paid at non-competi-tlvo
points on tho O. R. & N. than
at competitive points or at non-com-potitlvo
points on tho Northern Pa
cific. Often The Kidneys Are
