cratic state convention is meeting
here today and In nddltion to the
delegates several hundred promi
nent Democrats from all parts of the
state are here, partly in tho interest
of tho various candidates for posi
tions on tho state ticket, partly to
lend support and emphasis to the
movement to be started, to pledge
tho Democracy of Illinois to tho sup
port of Bryan. There seems to be
considerable enthusiasm for Bryan
among the Democrats of this state
and there is no doubt that a resolu
tion in favor of Bryan's presidential
candidacy will be supported by near
ly every delegate present Roger C.
Sullivan and Hopkins will probably
make a desperate effort to prevent
an endorsement of Bryan by tho
convention, but it is believed in well
informed circles that they will not
succeed in stemming the Bryan tide
which is said to be exceeding strong

convention of the national society of
American Florists and Horticultural
ists will open hero this afternoon.
Tho members will be welcomed by

be held tomorrow morning. Many
interesting and important essays
and discussions are on the program.
On Thursday evening a special meet
ing will be held to discuss the pro
posed national flower show. The

The Council Took First Steps
Toward Placing All Wires
Under Ground
Unless the members of tho city
council abruptly change their minds
very soon, all tho telephone, tele
graph, trolley and guard wires in
tho city of Salem will be placed under
ground nnd the unsightly wires and
poles will be erased from tho map of
Salem.
This will be an Innovation for a
city of this size, as only a few of the
larger cities in tho country have
adopted the plan of having nil the
wires underground.
When the committee on ordinances
last night reported an amended ordi
nance regulating the placing of wires
and poles, Alderman Steusloff moved
that the entire matter bo referred
back to the committee on ordinances,
with instructions to prepare an ordi
nance to move all the wires in the
city from the streets and alleys aud
place them underground.
"Does that mean all kinds of
wires?" was asked.
"The whole cheese," replied Mr.
Steusloff.
The resolution was adopted with a
whoop.
Council then accepted a supple
mental agreement with the General
Construction Company of Portland,
tho contractor for tho cement arch
over Mill creek on Commercial, that
$2000 additional would be paid for
tho building of tho brldgo nnd tho
strength of tho bridge is to bo dou
bled. This arrangement was brought
about by tho street railway people
agreeing to pay tho extra money for
the privilege of laying a track on tho
bridges. It was considered that It
'would look better this way than for
tho railroad to have an unsightly
bridge nearby this one. Jj. K. Page
was present and explained tho posi
tion of tho company. Tho plan was
adopted with but little discussion.
A resolution was adopted requiring
tho railroads to place alarm bells nt
tho prlnclpnl street crossings in tho
city and If a request did not bring
about tho required result, steps
should bo taken to compel tho roads
to do this. It was also stated in tho
resolution that they should keep their
crossings in order.

tho unsanitary condition of tho Cnp
Ital City Laundry at the place where
tho waste water empties into the
ditch. Tho matter was referred to
tho committee- on health.
