Canning Pears
Work at tho Salem Mutual can

one hundred mon, women and boys
began canning pears. This number
will bo Increased from day to day
und by tho latter part of tho week.
130 people will bo omployed nt the
cannery.
Tho season for ponrs will likely bo
n long one as tho crop Is largo and
will continue until thecrop of npples
aro ready to bo canned. It Is not
supposed that tho cannery will close
until tho end of tho season in No
vember Pears havo been coming In for sov
oral days in large quantities nnd
enormous quantifies aro stored away
at tho cannery. Tho fruit has to bo
gathered from tho trees before It is
fully ripo and each day tho ontiro
Jot Is gono over nnd sorted out and
tho ripest in tho lot Is canned nnd
tho other Is allowed to remain mid
slowly ripen lu the boxes nnd frays.
Most of tho pears that aro coming
Into tho fnctory havo been purchased
under contract and It is understood
thnt $15 per ton is tho price that
was received. Fancy pears aro bring
ing n small amount over that price
In the mnrkot, but It Is believed that
tho market wllj soon bo glutted nnd
thnt tho farmers who refused to sell
their fruit under contnict to tho enn

wns offered for tho entire lot.
